Remember the to choke, watch TB's "I Suck at Starcraft 2" videos. Watch you're replays and remember: If you have more than 400 minerals, you're doing something wrong.

As someone above me said, it's all about the macro. Macro your buildings to hotkeys so you can continue production without your attention being focused on your base all the time, such as training more units while you attack. I would suggest sticking with Random so you get to grips with all three races. Being random also has the advantage of briefly masking what race you end up with so the enemy doesn't know which build to take immediately. For example, i play Zerg, and other Zerg players tend to go full muta-ling rush at me, but may attack differently if they thought i was Terran or Protoss. It can really help to throw the opponent off balance. However you will find you gravitate towards one particular race, and it is that race you should just focus on and get good at. Don't play Terran if you suck at Terran but are great at Protoss. It's perfectly normal to be good at one particular race. Make sure to constantly build workers, even if you're saturated. You can send them to your expansion later. Don't climb the tech tree too fast. So often i've seen someone go from tier 1 units up to the heavy duty stuff and spam upgrades and end up losing to a cluster of really weak units because they didn't have any real army to speak of. Upgrades should come when you have a sizeable army and money to blow; the exception being for Zerg. You may want to get Burrow immediately, for example. Try to harass your opponent and stop him from expanding. If he gets too much map control, you will be boxed in and it will be impossible to win. Finally, scout, scout, SCOUT! Knowledge is power, especially in a game where you are relying on your information on the enemy to come up with a suitable counter. Are they building aerial units? Then get some marines and vikings out there! What about strong ground units? Set up some siege tanks in strategic points around your base!

Lastly, don't worry about getting your arse kicked in the first ten or twenty matches in the practice league. We all went through that and it's how you get better. Make sure to save and watch your replays, especially from both perspectives of you and your enemy. learn where you went wrong so you don't make the same mistakes again. Focus on getting your Actions Per Minute (APM) as high as you can.

Anything I need to know that only starcraft vets know? I will be a newbe to the Starcraft Franchise but im a big fan of RTS.
Here's all you need to know, if you face a Korean online prepare for insta-death.
Well considering he almost HAS to be Korean in order to play against Koreans, then no.

Unless he just plays someone of Korean ethnicity, but that shouldn't matter.
Koreans occasionally play on the West Coast servers.
Buying Starcraft 2

Yeah on Brood War, too bad that he isn't getting into that. (Although who hasn't already /sarcasm)
Those Koreans are crafty though, they will find a way into American servers.
So they can play with awesome lag.
But they think 7 mins ahead of you so the 3 min lag won't help.
Not unless you win within 7 minutes like all the Americans try to.
But thats means they would have won 3 mins ago.

No way, they can't use their 7 minute thinking advantage if the game is shorter than that.

Besides

@OP

Get a practice partner and really don't worry about getting a high APM, that should increase as you get better, not the other way around.
But due to their lag the american would not be able to attack the base properly.

... Only true if the American was playing on the Korean server.
But the Koreans took over the entire server. (I refuse to surrender.)

Also not true. But there a lot of good ones on private servers. But that doesn't matter, watch that white guy fight for his life against the dreaded "KOREANS".
Oh...we are being serious? I thought this was a hypothetical discussion...

Basically Husky will tell you everything you will ever need to know. hes done a couple of tutorials, and hundreds of videos on Starcraft and Starcraft 2.

I would suggest subscribing to his channel and watching his videos. he covers alot of high rank gameplay that you can learn massive ammounts from.
Quoted for truth.

My other advice is this: Don't succumb to the temptation of rushes. They'll win you games at lower levels but you won't learn anything.

- By the late game stages, you should ideally have a scout at every resource node, and every Xel Naga Watch Tower. Cloaked/burrowed units are especially useful for this purpose. When the enemy goes to expand, you'll know it and be able to promptly take out their expansion before it's established.
- Generally a good combination to attack with is long ranged anti-ground siege units (Siege Tanks/Colossi/Brood Lords) with ranged units that can attack ground and air (Marines/Stalkers/Hydralisks) In the case of Siege Tanks and Marines, the Siege Tanks will pound enemy defenses and pretty much any ground unit nearby, while the Marines protect the Siege Tanks from air units, and any unit that gets to close.
- Practice league heavily favours people who build Reapers, or turtle and mass Void Rays/heavy air unit fleets. Not to mention the game speed is almost unbearably slow.
- Get detectors early, in order to avoid being screwed over by Banshees, Dark Templar, or Roaches.
- YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS. Seriously, keep an eye on your supply count. There's nothing more frustrating than having the resources to amass a huge army, but then realizing you don't have enough Supply Depots/Pylons/Overlords.

- If you're playing as Zerg and you're making Mutalisks, don't attack with them until you have at least 7-8. Once the enemy sees that you have Mutalisks, they'll most likely pour an arseload of resources into anti-air (building turrets by their base). But if you surprise them with a decently sized force, you can do some pretty serious damage before they can react. Mutalisks can even take out enemies that counter them (Hydras/Sentries/Marines) if the Mutalisks outnumber them by a decent amount.

- If you're playing as Zerg, GET INFESTORS. Just about every Terran player has a habit of massing Marines. The Infestor has an ability called Fungal Growth which does 36 damage over time (Marines have 45HP, or 55 if they have the shield upgrade), and it prevents enemies from moving (they can still shoot though). They can also use Neural Parasite (Mind Control), which is useful against single, tough units.

- As other people have said, scouting is of the utmost importance. If you're Terran, get an Orbital Command and some Ravens. If you're Zerg, morph an Overlord into an Overseer, then plop a Changeling into their base (think the Spy from TF2, except it can't attack). and use your Queens to spawn Creep Tumors. If you're Protoss, use observers.
