I do however think that the massive amount of "low quality" culture (call me a snob if you may) and information does dilute and interfere with our minds in general. We can only take in so much (this is true for alot people of all ages) and the instant gratification tends to dominate depth these days. But maybe this is just me lamenting at the general state of the world so back on topic.
This is true. The forward progress of technology has increased the amount of Stuff happening, so as there's proliferation of sharing ideas, collaboration for more of the positive things, there's also more of the empty stuff.

And you aren't being snobby. It's like food and calories; there are calories from good food, which helps your body, and there are empty calories from food that does nothing for you. But the empty calories taste so good! Everything in moderation. ;)
If I ask nicely can I have a column here where I promote awesome stuff that the gaming community at large might have missed? ;)

Actualy, me and Gigantor are planning to do a duet review of some Dovstoevsky books!

yea i agree with that guy. most but not all of the new generation are dumb and ignorant. example my sister who did better than i currently am doing in english at school i have to constantly correct her grammar and vocabulary. plus she didnt see how killing Robert Mugabe was a good idea. in fact most people dont know who that is in the must constantly have phone on person and non stop texting group.
although i will say i find america is hit harder by this. sorry but "scotland? what state's that in" takes the cake. also a video i saw asked americans to name a country beginning with "a" only around 4/20 got one. (in case you missed it A-merica) one even said Iraq

i will admit that it is a worldwide phnoemenom (might be spelled wrong). also what the hell happened to typing in english like you would speak (i hope)?

plus the news thing whenever i go on the internet i read the news pages on the bt website up to anything ive not seen before. question to anyone in britain did you know someone was arrested for throwing a hedgehog at a boy asking if he wanted "to wear a hedgehog helmet"?

Dude, you know those "Americans can't find Iraq on a map" movies are nowhere near a statistical pool, just the result of lots of editng.

Is this suppose to be a revelation? I am very much aware of my generation's idiocy. What's-his-face isn't making any points I'm not already aware of. In my own school I'm considered 'That Smart Kid' - most likely because I have a vocabulary that consists of more than 7 words.

Me: "Not in particular."
Random Kid: "Why do you always use big words?"
This sounds all too familiar. I don't know about you but it makes me want to go Gordan Freeman on some asses with the nearest iron object.

I find it works best to just assume everyone you look at is stupid until they can prove otherwise. Having low expectations of people means I'm rarely disappointed.

Edit:

People of the "we R not r1t1ng a novel lol" mentality should be doing back breaking labour in some sort of gulag.

Step one, go to the Internet.
Step 2: Read what they say.
Step iii, go to any school across the United States and Western Europe.
Step IV- Listen to them.

You'll see how dumb kids are now. I don't think the mental capacity has gone down that much, it's that combined with useless historical facts, like who Razputin was, being replaced by even more useless facts.

This young whippersnappers are like Mr. Thick Thick Thickety Thick Face, from Thicktown Thinkania. Nd so's their dad.

*sigh*

The man is an arse, but he does make some valid points. Even we geeks tend to suffer this sometimes.

I'll admit, I didn't know who the Russian (or Soviet, more particularly) Premier during the Cuban Missile Crisis was. But I did know what it was, and how it happened.

I don't know some stuff, and frankly, that which I don't know doesn't automatically concern me. If I need to know it, I'll research it. If I want to know it, I'll research it. Until then, it's out there. There are books, websites, people. At least 1 of these 3 options will have the information I will 1 day seek.

MEH!!!!
An older man talking about averages. It only takes a small amount to pull an average down. Although I have seen a slight lack of knowledge people should know at certain times. I've forgotten every example which is rather annoying but I it's happened and I felt smarter after telling whoever whatever they didn't know but then felt depressed as to why this person didn't know something I know billions of people know.

Everytime I search the internet i always look for the Darwin Awards for some reason and it depresses me even more. This shows just how stupid humans can be no matter who you are or how old you are. One sticks out in my memory of a guy who wanted to float and drink beer. So he got balloons of helium and floated a mile up and froze to death. Hilarious but sad for the ones who loved him.

*large paragraph that I would rather not have take up so much space*
indeed, 'tis a sad thing to have befallen upon us. anyway, I frequently look up references in video games after I have to stop playing and finally wash the ever growing stack of dirty dishes, but yeah, my bubble actually burst before it began, being that my parents raised me to look things up whenever I don't understand something in literature or conversation, hell, takes me like 2-3 months to finish a long book because I look up so many of the references and inside jokes (e.g. in a childs movie I took my little brother to frenchman called his men to action, in which they quickly decided to yell "WE SURRENDER!" in a very outrageously flamboyant accent, now, see if you get the hidden joke there). back on topic, yes humanity CAN be idiotic at times, and while most people who throw their lives away to have the incredible ease of technology are, not everyone is.
