[HEADING=1]caffeine|[small]domble[/small][/HEADING][HEADING=1]INCEPTION[/HEADING]![]()
[HEADING=3]Anyone else noticed the 3rd Rock cast getting very popular lately?[/HEADING]
We, that is the cinema-going public, are constantly crying out for new and exciting things. Our patience is growing thin for comic book films, our remake to originality ratio is on the uncomfortable side of bum jumped, and if we see another set of fangs on the big screen we're probably going to open our own jugulars to save the sparkly undead the effort. Then a film like Inception comes along.
We finally get a completely new film with a fresh, unique concept and what happens? It becomes a critical and commercial succe- Wait, what?
Okay, this can't be right. This means that the world is working the way it should. Next thing you know firemen will be paid more than footballers and the world will open up in a gaping maw to swallow Paris Hilton - and if you don't find irony in Paris Hilton dying by way of gaping maw then please stop reading as my reviews aren't going to be to your taste.
Now critics a little more timely than yours truly will have already pointed out that Inception is directed by Hollywood's latest golden boy Chris Nolan, who directed the finger-gnawingly good The Dark Knight - an act which earned him a special place on the list of Guys it's Okay to Fancy. For those of you who keep track of my futile fight against gaydom, he joins his peers Stephen Fry, Patrick Stewart and Ryan Reynolds in the race to apply for a restraining order.
My fondness for digression aside for a moment, let's move onto my penchant for lame introduction closers: Is Inception a dream come true, or did Nolan wet the bed?
Hot-cha.
[HEADING=1]"We need to go deeper."[/HEADING][HEADING=3]That's what she said, etcetera.[/HEADING]
After the likes of Titanic and Catch Me if you Can, I was delighted when Leonardo DiCaprio decided to become an actor. It was like a switch in his brain flipped in about 2006 and he said to himself "Holy shit, I don't have to be just an embrassingly more talented version of Robert Pattinson... Whoever he is because Twilight won't be made for another two years."
That's right, DiCaprio can see into the future.
My point is that Cheezburger's newest Meme sensation [http://cheezcomixed.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/e2d276f5-7b8d-41f1-9b85-75ade03f2d97.jpg] has started showing enough promise to be The Next Big Thing. I stay "started" because he hasn't yet subscribed to Scientology, been caught with drugs or become Will Smith. Yet.
In Dom Cobb[footnote]A character I instantly liked once I found out we share a name. Look, it's a big thing for me; no one has this name. The last one was Vin Diesel in The Fast and the Furious, and I could write books about how little I care about cars. Or Vin Diesel.[/footnote] he has a truly intriguing character. One that is equal parts troubled hero, flawed victim and fractured addict. To his unending credit, DiCaprio brings them all to the table with finesse and an easy charisma which is quickly becoming his calling card. With a simple glance and a ratty goatee, he does more than most actors can hope to in an entire career.
Speaking of people rocketing skywards with a total disregard for physics, we also have Tom Hardy as Eames, and after starring in the double whammy of Bronson and Rock'n'Rolla he has been either casted or desired for Every Project in the Movie World for the Foreseeable Future. Here playing the role of Limey Scumbag, he exudes so much roguish charm you could probably bottle it and sell it to bookish types as some kind of getting laid insurance policy on a night out.
One thing the film definitely isn't lacking in is Totty. There's Cillian Murphy for the ladies who like 'em skinny, Irish and creepy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt for ladies who believe the Third Rock crowd need a career in gritty psuedo-realism, and Ellen Page for ladies who like other ladies. Don't like 'em too young, girls? Go for a bit of Ken Watanabe, the very definition of FILF.
Let's see if that particular piece of vernacular will embed itself into the public consciousness.
Anyway, you can rest assured that you won't find a bad performance here, but the real star of the show is DiCaprio and his host of inner demons. While his character is great one, the rest of the cast suffer a little from lack of characterisation and mostly revert to archetypes. Normally I'd be happy to get out my criticism stick and go to town, but in this case it works - and in spite of this everyone gets their own little moment to shine.
[HEADING=2]" Dreams feel real while we're in them...[/HEADING]
[HEADING=1]... We only realise something was wrong when we wake up."[/HEADING][HEADING=3]My uncle had a dream where he got up and went to work. Then he got up and went to work.
I have an interesting family.[/HEADING]
Now talking about Inception without revealing major plot points is difficult. This is because everything that happens is a major plot point. Honestly, it's like after Rotten Tomatoes gave The Prestige a paltry 75% he decided he hated critics and wanted to give them as hard a time as possible. Yeesh Chris, it's not our fault it was only great, you're the one who failed to make our testicles explode in cinemagraphic wonder.
So instead of talking about the plot too much, I'll tackle the issue of the concept being stolen from a Donald Duck comic.
First off, let's just state the obvious: No one gives a fuck. If a nappy-wearing pond-dweller has to be ripped off to bring us one of the most exhilarating pieces of cinema in years then it's a price that I, for one, am more than happy to pay. And did everyone suddenly forget about 2000's The Cell? I would have thought that it would have been a much more pertinent comparison seeing as, y'know, it's practically the same film.
Okay stealing ideas is a pretty serious thing in the courtroom, but as a cinema-going misanthrope I couldn't really care less as long as I'm being entertained. And in this aspect, Inception delivers in a variety of ways.
The film is just packed with things you've never experienced before. Ever seen a fistfight occur on a staircase that defies physics, or a city folded over like a calzone? Of course not, and if I told you that these, compared to the rest of the content of the film, are boring subjects, you know you're in for a treat.
The only thing is that arming the film with these bold ideas has given it some kind of ego. If this was a school yard Inception would swagger in without its tie, high five the nearest douchebag with his pants on too low and wink at a girl so hard she'd pass out in sheer ecstasy. Yes, it's very, very cool, but its not as smart as it likes to think it is. It seems to have started out with the idea that it wants to say something about life, reality and the way the mind views things, but then it figured out that gunfights in zero gravity are totally sweet and got distracted.
These little details are extremely entertaining, it has to be said, but the overall narrative suffers for it. Imagine being given a summary of all six seasons of Lost by a man who is on fire - yes, fire is awesome, but you can hardly pay attention to it and the words he is screaming with his last handful of breaths and still have a good idea of what's going on. It's clear that this is film was intended to be viewed more than once to glean its full meaning, but the hefty run time will alienate a lot of people, including myself, from doing that. And I enjoyed it.
Just a coincidence with no bearing on the film itself, but this is actually the first movie I have ever viewed in IMAX. My opinion of the format in less than ten words? I No Longer Care About IMAX.
[HEADING=2]"They come here to sleep?"[/HEADING]
[HEADING=1]"No, they come to wake up."[/HEADING][HEADING=3]A good end quote; sounds great, but if you listen closely you'll discover that it doesn't really mean anything.[/HEADING]
The Verdict? One of the boldest pieces of mainstream cinema in years, and original in content if not in concept.
With all its lights and dazzle, it'll leave some a bit bewildered about exactly what it's trying to say, but even if you leave nonplussed, at least you'll be entertained in the process. For those of you who are sick of the usual brainless blockbuster fare this will hardly be, aha, your worst nightmare.
Hot, and indeed, cha.

Hey guys, September 2nd was my one year anniversary for the Caffeine series!
A big thanks to everyone who has offered their support over this past year, you've made these trivial wastes of time a pleasure to write. I hope you enjoyed the previous reviews, mainly because I'm too lazy to improve so this is about the best you can expect.
A special mention to Pimppeter2 who managed to put up with my nonsense long enough to write not one but two Knuckleduster collaborations. Thanks man, you performed a miracle in bringing my reviews to the unwashed masses.
