Well, I may have lied a bit with the title, but a lab in Livermore, California, about an hour's drive east of San Fransisco, is planning to use the world's largest laser beam to create a miniature star in order to prove that fusion power is possible. The star is expected to die nearly instantaneously after its creation, but is meant to get the ball rolling on this interesting new energy source. Of course, the reaction necessary to create the star is quite volatile, yet researchers insist that there is no danger to the public. The expected date for the end of their research: the end of 2012.
No danger, huh? =P
