In all of my years of PC gaming, I have never enjoyed an FPS so thoroughly. I didn't see anyone talking about Call of Duty 4 yet on the forums so I thought I'd start a discussion.

Although the campaign was a little on the short side, I found it well scripted and positively enthralling. Also, I think it's pretty commendable that the game has both a phenomenal singleplayer AND multiplayer mode. It appears that CSS,GRAW, and COD3 had a threesome and COD4 was the beautiful rosie cheeked result...

I hope to see/hear Yahtzee review the game soon! -edit-

I keep hearing about this game and it's really pissing me off. I don't have the money for it, but I have to go out and try the game now. Curse you popular opinion!

BTW, if you mean a Yahtzee review, then I'm sure he'll completely thrash the game. He don't play no stinkin' multiplayer. I also expect to hear "yanks" a lot in said review.

Well, at least in this one there's a lot more British people...and your British character doesn't DIE.
Oh, I'm sorry, did I spoil the plot for you? Well let me remind you of something. Anyone with an IQ over 100 could tell the game's ending. Antagonists die, good guys win.

Sorry for that short digression. I actually thought the game wasn't bad, and good to play when very few recent FPSes have any lasting appeal. I especially liked the well-executed ending.

I'm still waiting for the black hero personally. it's good to know that the game does not devolve into "America is so awesome" though. I have the ps3 version and as much as I like the game the multiplayer is about as busted as Halo 3's player hosting and forced match making on consoles needs to stop.

I love it. A lot. So much. I just occasionally wish it had the cover system of Gears of War. :p

Beat it on Regular, giving it a second run through on Veteran just as I did with CoD2.

yeah if you arent playing this game you are really missing out. After countless dissapointments as of late with some of the newer games its great to see a game that lives up to its name.

I heart COD4

I'm impressed by COD4 - graphics, sound, action, and story are all top notch. Whatever problems I have with this game are fairly nitpicky though in the end I was disappointed. I am more a fan of tactical squad based games like GRAW2 and COD4 just had too many moments of mad dash charges for glory.

While I really enjoyed COD4 while I played it I'm certainly going to trade it in for credit this week.

Has anyone had a chance to play this on both PC and console? How do the control setups compare? Basically, have they done a good job with both, or does it feel more shoehorned on one compared to another? I ask, mainly because this seems like a game I'd enjoy on a big screen, with my big speakers, as opposed to on a small screen, with my small(er) speakers. Thoughts?

Edit: Edited bit made irrelevant by edits.

Me too - that level felt like a movie, pure and simple. Though replaying it about 5 or 6 times to try to let the patrol pass you without being spotted was a little annoying, the rest was awesome.

Yeah, this one reaffirmed my faith in the promise of the next gen. It's almost flawless. I was absolutely blown away.

Really fun game. Some story flaws, not much replay value in the single player. Fun fun fun multiplayer, and the level up system is great. Still, I hope there's a real balance feature in play so that newbies aren't getting thrown into games with people that have all the perks and all the weapons. It's competing with Halo 3 in my queue, but I'll probably still be playing both in six months. I'll just like Halo 3 a little more.

I've got it on the PC, it's a great game. I've found the single player kind of frustrating, on the hardest difficulty (what I prefer to play on) tends to be a lot of picking off a few guys to try to thin out the fire, then just charging into the jaws of death and hoping you don't catch a .30 round in the face.

Do it a few times and eventually you get close enough to the enemy spawn that they stop spawning there and they start appearing further up. Rinse and repeat, although the visuals are very nice.

The multiplayer though is great fun, that surprised me. I wasn't expecting to even buy this one, I wasn't all that interested in the other Call of Duty games, so this one was kind of a surprise. The unlocks and challenges are a lot of fun, some of the challenges are fun and silly (jump 30 feet to your death, destroy 15 cars, etc.) while others can be a challenge to earn (knife kills) and some you just get with time.

Good variety in the multiplayer too, with the Hardcore and Classic modes, and things ranging from Deathmatch to Counterstrike like plant/diffuse a bomb.

My biggest disappointment really has been how bad the scopes are you can earn for the assault rifles, they barely magnify, sway somewhat, and they block a huge portion of your screen. The red dot sight seems superior in every way. Some of the other unlockable weapons seem a bit off, I don't mind some being no better than earlier weapons, just different, but some of them seem to have little application compared to what else you can have. But those are pretty minor complaints, and besides the G3 is made of awesome.

Do you know if you can get the holographic sight in multiplayer?
Do you mean the one with the beam that shows up on Night Vision goggles? That's just an IR beam, and isn't in MP (there's not many night MP maps anyway, Wet Work is the only one I'd consider using night vision on).

Basically, you've got irons, the red dot, and the zoom ACOG.

The Night Vision would be substantially more useful if the red dot beam also appeared with Night Vision (although there would be a lot of potential for abuse I guess if it showed enemy red dot sights as well).

I use the red dot site with nearly all my weapons, since I'm not a fan of the 203 grenade launcher, and the ACOG scope is just awful for most weapons (barely magnifies, adds sway that you cannot hold your breathe to counter even if you're using a sniper rifle, and can often make things more difficult to hit). I will readily take the iron sites of any weapon over the ACOG scope. Why it's the final upgrade to earn with each weapon (requiring something like twice the number of kills than it takes to get the red dot) is beyond me.

But, the game is quite new and there are probably a lot of issues to be tackled in upcoming patches (the MP44 is pretty bad for the last Assault Rifle unlock, the ACOG is rarely better than the red dot, the bolt action sniper rifles seem to have strange accuracy issues, etc.).

I would call myself an 'achievement whore', and the challenge system is really rewarding, even if there aren't any achievements involved.

:| I need a new hobby.

I found the single player campaign to be one of the best I've played in years, despite how short it was. Being the gunner in the AC-10 was wonderful, you just feel like god in that fucking thing. And the fact that there wasn't that "fuck yeah america" feel that a lot of wartime shooters have, it made the experiance all the better.

The multiplayer's even better than the single player, though, and I've gotta say was probably the best I've played. The leveling system is balanced enough so newbies can jump in and not have too much trouble, but the weapons you unlock sometimes tend to be a let-down. The AK-74u and G3 are my favorites, and I rarely play with any others, and those are both unlocked fairly early.
