Call of Duty 5, or World at War if you want to be really picky about such things, is just another Call of Duty World War II shooter where you play a cross between a Russian and an American. Eventually, as the Russian, only you will raise the flag above the Reichstag, and as the Americans there's something slightly different; you're killing the Japanese.
For the most part, I really don't like Call of Duty 5. Compared to Call of Duty 4, 5 just feels wrong. It's very pretty and well polished in the graphics department, and the audio is fantastic, but there's something missing about the gameplay. Weapons just don't have the feel that they did in 4, and most of them aren't even worth using without the time to aim. That is to say, a bolt action rifle. Yes, I know that historically there were many more rifles than there were machine guns, but the weapons take two or three bullets to kill an enemy with, and with a five shot clip after you've gone through two enemies you're reloading.
I'm also going to complain about the amount of grenades the Japanese threw at me, even on Regular (on Veteran that's just masochism).
The best things about Call of Duty 5 is the first Russian mission and a minority of the weapons, such as the Browning Automatic Rifle or the Gewehr 43, but otherwise, there's nothing about the gameplay that I like.
The multiplayer is full of people either using sniper rifles or machine guns running around. It's easier to get kill streaks on certain maps, and I've found that once one side gets ahead, they stay ahead regardless of what happens.
There's just too many things that let Call of Duty 5 down compared to the few good things about it.
Also, Nazi Zombies just isn't Left 4 Dead or Killing Floor. I got bored of it after soloing up to round 15 then I put the controller down and walked away, because it basically consisted of me shooting Zombies in the head with the Gewehr or the BAR, and failing that I fall back to the biggest rapidfiring gun I had my hands on...
I've tried it, and I've tried to like it, but I guess I'm tired of World War II shooters and something as small as a minigame shouldn't be considered enough to say that an entire game is good, especially when the multiplayer is drowned with snipers and sprayers that turns it into a game of more modded-controllers wins, and especially when the whole thing is just repetition without any progress or seeming end to it. The difficulty doesn't really increase either, it just enhances the numer of zombies it throws at you and hopes you'll die, and there's nothing that pins you down or otherwise incapitates you for the need for teammates, other than being knocked over when a Zombie hits you about twice.
In my opinion, I'd stay clear of it, but who knows, maybe World War II is what people like because Nazis were bad... wait, didn't the Americans drop nuclear warheads...? Call of Duty 5 isn't new, it isn't especially unique, but it would actually score points if you played as, say, a German or Japanese soldier... for once...
