Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Gets A Teaser Trailer

Grass grows, birds fly, and Activision announces Call of Duty games - but this one gets back to Black Ops.

It's that time of year again. You can feel it in the air - that precise point when Activision reveals its new <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/call%20of%20duty?os=call+of+duty>Call of Duty game. But it just wouldn't be tradition if <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139734-Activision-Confirms-New-Call-of-Duty-From-Treyarch-in-2015>we got the reveal all at once, oh no. Hence why there's a teaser trailer preparing everyone for a full announcement of - wait for it - Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Black Ops is perhaps the second most popular Call of Duty franchise after Modern Warfare - but is hands-down the most subversive. The original Black Ops followed a Cold War operative suffering from Russian reprogramming as he took part the Bay of Pigs invasion and Vietnam War. The sequel introduced a near-future world where those historical events fueled a future of insurgent terrorism and drone warfare. Where the third game will go from there is anyone's guess - but the teaser's tone suggests it will be a grand finale tying everything together.

Black Ops developer Treyarch is also the studio that brought us <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/140223-Call-of-Duty-Advanced-Warfare-Ascendance-DLC-Brings-Zombies-To-Burger-Town>Call of Duty's zombies mode - so you can absolutely expect that will be a feature in the new game.

The trailer itself isn't much to speak of - just a handful of quotes from previous games over the background of a soldier illuminated with numbers. But after the relatively disappointing responses to <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/criticalintel/11056-Call-of-Duty-Ghosts-Is-A-60-Game-Of-Follow-The-Leader>Ghosts and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/editorials/reviews/12557-Call-of-Duty-Advanced-Warfare-Review>Advanced Warfare, maybe letting Treyarch get back to basics is just what Call of Duty needs. We'll find out more when the official announcement arrives on April 26.

Love me some Black ops by far my favorite MP of the whole COD series. Tried MW3 and AW and Ghost and they play totally different from Treyarchs stuff.

I dunno, the persistent Xbox logo in the corner kinda ruined it.

Heh, funny how they didn't want to continue Ghosts.

EDIT: 2 things, 1, I know Treyarch didn't do Ghosts and 2, I was referring to Activision in general, read a few posts below.

For me, the only worthy entries in the Call of Duty series (outside of 4) have been the Treyarch games. I'm not much of a Call of Duty fan, but I'm up for this one. I was downright impressed with the first Black Ops, if I'm being honest. Take that with a grain of salt if you like - I'm only talking about the campaigns. Never got into the multiplayer past CoD4 and only played Zombies for the lulz.

Treyarch will probably make something good, Call of Duty 3 was an awkward cough before they got used to the schedule and everything else they've made has been gold.

That said the teaser doesn't mean much unless you're a Black Ops obsessive who knows that the pose is the same as Black Ops 1's front cover soldier, and the quotes come from the two Black Ops games while ignoring World at War for some reason. I doubt that there will be a heavy focus on the previous games in this new one, just gaining interest with the references.

Well, Ghosts wasn't made by Treyarch.
I know it wasn't made by Treyarch, but I mean that they didn't want to continue with Ghosts after boasting how much of a "succesor" of Modern Warfare it would be and how "influential" it would be for next gen systems.

Ah, I'm glad someone else mentioned that this whole series actually started with World at War. Although, to be fair, I can see why they wouldn't really touch that one. It doesn't really have much to do with the Black Ops storyline beyond Reznov.

Zombies! Please, give me more zombies! Treyarch, you are my last hope for CoD. Ghosts was horrid, and Advanced Warfare was...lackluster, but you guys still seem to know how to make Call of Duty fun. And the way the last zombie map ended, I think there's some real potential for where the zombie story can go now. Remember that it ends with an alarm sounding and Susan and Edward being called to the basement, with Edward saying, "I wish our heroes were real..." So now do we get to find out that these kids were playing this game because what's going on in the real world is so much worse?

BO3 is probably the second best annoucement they could've given if you ask me. Only a pure zombie-focused one would've beaten that.

World War 2, most like. And it's Sam (Samantha), not Susan.
And the ending also hints that, if stuff was currently made up, it's about to become real because, to quote Sam directly, her father "has a plan"...

Edit:
In case someone wants to see a logo-free version of the teaser, I found one earlier:

Good. Treyarch's CoD entries are the only ones I actually enjoy. Black Ops II has thus far easily been the height of the series, Ghosts and Advanced Warfare didn't even come close to it. So long as BlOps III improves on everything that II featured this will easily be the best CoD game in recent memory.

Do note that I'm speaking entirely from a single-player campaign point of view, I could not give less of a shit about the multi-player aspects.

I didn't know that. Ghosts just became even more amusing to me.

Wait till Half Life 3 comes out.

Actually, forget I said that. All civilization would be eradicated by solar flares by the time that game gets announced.

Wrong studio. There are 3 CoD studio's at Activision, Infinity Ward who did 3 MW's before moving to Ghosts, Treyarch who do Black ops and the new Sledgehammer who did Advanced warfare.

Ghosts 2 will be next year Infinity ward have been working on it for over 18 months.

HL3 would also reveal a 3, not a III. As in, not the roman version of the number.

No Ghost sequal? Pity I honestly truly want a sequel just so that Rourke can finally DIE!!! My god I wanted that man to just die. That ending made me angry in ways I don't quite understand. Say what you will about these recent CoD games, but these voice actors are putting their all's into their roles. Black Ops III Here's hoping we finally find out what actually happened to Reznov. Perhaps he will be the main character starting from the escape from Vorkuta?
