Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC Map Pack Strikes First

If you like Call of Duty: Black Ops, set aside a few bucks for the game's first map pack coming in 2011.

Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Black-Ops-Xbox-360/dp/B003JVKHEQ] producer Dan Bunting recently went on the Major Nelson podcast to talk about stuff, things, and the first DLC map pack coming to the game. In early 2011, Treyarch will release Black Ops' First Strike.

Sure, announcing a map pack for a Call of Duty game is like announcing that the sky is still up, but it has to be done. Bunting revealed that First Strike will include four new regular maps and an additional zombie map, for a total of five cartographic additions to Black Ops.

First up is the Berlin Wall map, which takes place at Checkpoint Charlie during a battle between the forces on each side of the wall. Secondly there's Discovery, a map at an Antarctic German research station that was abandoned in World War II. Third we have Kowloon, set on the rooftops of the Kowloon area of China. Fourth, Treyarch is throwing a wrench into the mix with Stadium, which takes place in a hockey rink. Hope you've brought your skates.

The zombie mode map is called Ascension, and we only know that zombies are involved. As per an agreement, First Strike will be a timed exclusive on Xbox Live when it releases on February 1, 2011, so PS3 and PC owners will have to sit on their hands for a few weeks once again. It'll cost... can you guess? $15.

Considering that Black Ops had the like a beast [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105411-Its-Official-Black-Ops-Sold-Better-Than-Modern-Warfare-2], expect some huge numbers from First Strike. I sure hope Treyarch and Activision like money.

While I still think 3 bucks a map is way to much, at least A. all the maps are original and B. one of them is a zombie map.

Oh, awesome, so now on PC we would have to wait a month and pay for it? I could understand the whole waiting a month thing with World at War since we got them for free, but that is just a rip off. Well, glad I decided to wait on buying this until I knew how much they would try to screw us over for with map packs, and glad I'm not buying it.

I initially thought this sounded like a complete rip-off, but it's good to know they're all original maps this time around.
The Berlin Wall map, the one set on the rooftops of Kowloon, and the one on the hockey stadium all sound really interesting.

Oh my, same here. I remember playing a similar level in CounterStrike with little friction and an oversized puck and nets. Damn fun, it was.

I love how people are still all "WHAT THE FUCKING FUCKING SHIT FUCK SHIT FUCK FUCK SHIT FUCK ACTIVISION FIFTEEN DOLLARS FUCK SHIT EXPLETIVES" when you would have thought that since that was the price for all of MW2's map packs that it would be fairly obvious that this map pack would follow suit. It's not that surprising.

At least they're all new maps this time.

Wow, these maps actually sound exciting and fun. If they are as good as they sound, it's certainly worth the price tag.

Y'know, I'm really annoyed at the fact that Treyach keeps regarding Kowloon as it's own city when in fact it's just another district of Hong Kong. Saying "Kowloon is an area of China" is like saying "Brooklyn is an area of the United States".

Anyways, I'm not buying the DLC because I always prefer proper expansions over having to buy digital mappacks online. It's just 4 maps and a zombie map. The multiplayer maps were no different to most of the multiplayer maps in the history of CoD, and the zombie mode in Black Ops gets pretty boring after a while.

There is five maps not three, it's still expensive though.

Don't you have to pay for Xbox Live Gold Membership?

This map pack is worth the price alone if they do one thing: turn off the friction on the ice rink.

The thought of having a bunch of people sliding around firing wildly cursing at a Zamboni fills my Canadian heart with glee.
Indeed, it fills my english heart with glee, as I've seen how an entire country reacts to ice when it's not used to it.

In two words, Sheer panic. In three, Sheer hilarious panic.

Anyway, I feel like I should be just as angry at this as I was at the modern warfare 2 map packs, but to be honest, a new map to play zombies on seems to justify it for me, as I know that would take a bit more effort than just porting a few COD4 maps...>_> Of course, another big bonus is that all the maps are new, if such a thing that you really should expect from a map pack can be called a bonus. Seriously, are my expectations of activision that low that when they offer what seems to be a fair and decent deal, I feel compelled to call it a bonus? Damn.
