Can someone pinch me?

Here at last, is a triple-A FPS title bringing bots back to a genre from which they should never have strayed? Man, I'm sold. I'm buying this sucker. Bots in FPS games needs a comeback and I'm damn well going to support it. In this one move Treyarch has won more respect from me than Infinity Ward ever had. Good job, team.

Um, so yeah... discussion value. Tell us your best in-game moment with multiplayer bots. Can be any game. One of my favourites was setting up a king of the hill match in a Perfect Dark arena called Fortress, which had a gladiator like pit in the centre. A shield in the middle, and lasers all around, I'd watch all those HardSims rush in and laser each other to win the hill. Change the team names to friends of mine and it was comedy GOLD!

Mine has to be Red Faction 2 for the PS2 - growing up; didn't have interent on it so I had a fun time setting up games with tons of Bots and shooting them with Railguns, I can remember but I think Killzone PS2 had them and Starwars: Battlefront 1 had them.

OT - I think the bot Idea for BlackOPS is great, it gives me the chance to practice on some new guns or explore some new maps and such; hope you cna put bots into Zombie Mode.

Bots have always been second to actual players in terms of intelligence and ability. The only reason we ever used them was for single player or to make teams when other people weren't available to play. That was before the internet. Now there are always people online who can play a match, making bots obsolete, at least in multiplayer. There are notable exceptions to this, such as the zombies in L4D or the jets and helicopters in modern warfare, but enemies who have all the same abilities as the player might as well be controlled by players.

Bots are also for people who hate the multiplayer crowd. I, for one, am happy to see them return! Guess I'll be getting Black Ops after all.

maybe you should clarify what a bot is for those who dont know...

anyway, what i would like to see in the game more than bots is something in halo reach, the personality profiler thingie, where you can select your preferred player type for multiplayer, mostly just weed out the annoying twelve year olds.

It's pretty obvious to everyone they aren't as good as human players most of the time (anyone who says ALL of the time has never player Unreal Tournament) but you're missing the point. It's always the internet being brought up as something that renders bots useless, but don't believe this is so for many reasons:

*Humans can be better, but humans also tend to whine, abuse, teamkill, camp, steal vehicles, go lone wolf in a team game, spam chat, go AFK, ragequit, obstruct people, ignore special server rules/limitations etc etc etc. Bots always play properly, without complaint, whenever you want and HOW you want.

*Not everyone has fast internet, and telling them to just get it is pretty narrow minded. Even many that DO have internet prefer bots for the above reason alone.

*5 years down the line most people will move on from a game, and if you really like the game and can't find a group of similar minded people, bots allow you to keep playing for as long as you want. Forever, if you so wish. Personally I look forward to enjoying that luxury with Perfect Dark and Timesplitters.

*Split screen or LAN matches with just a handful of players take on the size of a full server when bots are included. Even if they're lousy bots, theres more action and you're friends take on the role of 'bosses'.

For some modern games like Bad Company 2, bots are a missed opportunity for people to learn how to best use vehicles and weapons in a combat situation. Since there is no offline mode for such games, people are forced to do their experimenting online, causing much frustration to the players around them- especially those that could use the vehicles to much better effect.

Bots allow you to explore an arena at your own pace, checking out the scenery or map layout and shortcuts without getting killed by people out for stat-boosting. In most bot supported games you can even walk around an arena alone, having a look at the architecture you'd otherwise be too busy to notice.

Even if you don't ever use bots, there will always be players that do. There's no excuse to keep them out. Games are full of features some use more than others, and bots are no different.

Anyway, as for another great moment with bots- I had one in Bf 1942 where a guy in an AA gun on an aircraft carrier brought down an incoming bomber, but then had to watch helplessly as the charred wreckage drifted down and blew up a friendly plane as it was taking off, before sliding over and decapitating him.

Nightfire had great bots, and great multiplayer. Easily the best 007 game multiplayer, except Goldeneye ofcourse.

If this is true, I am getting Black Ops, I haven't said that about a COD game since modern warfare

I am very excited, as a man who hates playing with or against people this is fantastic news

Well said. Written. Posted. Whatever.

Bots don't teabag either. That may seem minor, but I hate teabagging.

On topic: What excellent news! This certainly makes Black Ops a lot more appealing. I may actually get it. And by "get it", I mean subtly manipulate my brother into buying it for me. And himself. He loves online shooters and on Halo: Reach the only game mode he seems to play is SWAT, which is practically a Call of Duty game's multiplayer game anyway (no shields, no fancy armor abilities, just twitch shooting)

I don't have any strong bot-related memories, but I do remember generally enjoying Perfect Dark and one of the Timesplitters games a great deal on account of their bots.

Why thank you! Yeah I forgot about teabagging. Interestingly enough the rebel bots in Battlefront often run up to a dead stormtrooper and unload a pistol into the corpse for good measure. Man, they really hated those guys...

I just have to ask, where did your avatar come from? It's really one of a kind!

That's a very good point. However, I like the idea of bots being added so that I can practice and adjust to new maps -- in the absence of competitive play. I personally don't always like to play with the consummately immature online FPS community, and the idea of having bots (who don't throw childish insults with every frag) as an alternative is appealing.

That doesn't mean you have access to other players.

My favorite thing about Gears of War 2 is that you can play with bots, and since I don't have Xbox Live, well, match making is out of the question.

I think the only game with bots that I hate is TF2. Just to make sure no one misunderstands me, I love TF2 but I hate the bots.

Are they legit bots that you can add in local stuff? If that's the case then it might give my favorite current game, Reach, a run for its money.

But I was under the impression they were just training bots. Like mindless dummies you'll get in a training mode and won't be available for real multiplayer stuff.

*sigh*

Screw it. Black Ops, one way or another, I'm going to probably end up gracing my PS3 with you one way or another now.

I hate the crowd of delinquents online, so if I could have a pretty fun time without the teabagging, prejudiced, lagging, ruinous twats, count me interested. Games like Reach would have validated itself as more purchase-worthy in my eyes had it included bots for firefight and instant action "multiplayer."

That reminds me, I can't get MW2 to work, anyone got any ideas with that?

OT: Yeah that makes me happy, but I'm not sure the game will work now.
