Call of Duty - Veteran

Is there any point to Veteran difficulty in Call of Duty? I'm trying to complete Black Ops on Veteran at the moment, not because I enjoy the challenge but because I want the damn achievements.

Playing it on Veteran simply isn't enjoyable for me. I'd much rather play it on Normal difficulty, sponge bullets like a juggernaut, and enjoy the game. Call of Duty's style of play doesn't exactly mix well with the harsh realities of Veteran. In some games I'll up the difficulty at the start of the game so I become accustomed to it (now I think about it, I usually do this in stealth based games) but not in Call of Duty.

What do you think about Veteran in Call of Duty, or the hardest - almost impossible - difficulty in games? Do you play it because you simply find the other difficulties too easy? Do you like the challenge? Or do you, like me, do it simply because you're an achievement whore?

on cod 6 campaign was just too easy on regular so i decided to take it to veteran and i decided to get it for the achievements

I found Veteran difficulty to be much more difficult for COD 4 and World at War (Grenades, grenades everywhere...). It was quite a breeze in Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 compared to the older ones...I did it for the achievements. That's mainly the only reason why I play things on the hardest difficulty in many games now...Of course I'll do almost anything if there's an achievement or trophy for it anyways.

Oh yeah, COD4's Veteran was pretty hard - especially Heat and No Fighting in the War Room. I didn't even attempt COD5's: I didn't fancy all those infinitely respawning enemies. And I'm currently picking my way through the easier missions in Black Ops. Though it seems at some point in every level there is a corridor or section that is just insanely difficult. I'll probably give up on doing them all. But seeing as I haven't got Live at the moment, I need something to get me angry.

I mostly play on veteran for achievements at this point, mainly because COD doesn't play well on harder difficulties. The mass of enemies, and the more arcade-oriented gameplay does not function as well on the higher difficulties. Whenever I get the urge to play a realistic shooter, I typically just play Operation Flashpoint.

The only Call of Duty game I can't beat on Veteran is Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. No Fighting in the War Room is impossible with that timer. Taking away 3 minutes is insane. And forget Mile High Club. I'm not sure why everyone says Heat is hard, but I must have gotten lucky.
Black Ops was easy on Veteran for me, but then I played the game first on Hard, so that might have had something to do with it. Simply stay low and let you team do a lot of the killing. World at War took a few tries, but I eventually figured out that the enemies stop spawning if you kill enough of them. Bolt action rifle is the way to go. MW2, piece of cake.
I play Veteran solely for the trophies, like you. I like to be pushed, but Veteran seems intent on breaking players.

I dislike Veteran difficulty in Call of Duty. That level of difficulty just doesn't suit the gameplay. Dying from being shot once or twice doesn't bother me in and of itself, I'm used to that level of difficulty in games like Operation Flashpoint (first one) and ArmA, but in those games you're not constantly being shot at, you don't spend 80% of your time in close quarters battle, and you're not some one man army tasked with personally wiping out dozens of enemies in each mission. And enemies don't respawn constantly until you cross some magical threshold.

Of course it's stupid of me to whine because it's just an option, there for those who want it. I find it unnecessarily frustrating so I don't play on Veteran.

I tried Mile High Club on Vet and got close but just couldn't beat it, War Room is just annoying, the checkpoints are ridiculous.
Heat is pretty easy though, actually its really easy compared to War Room.

Call of Duty 1 and 2 were damn easy Veteran while still being really fun to play.

...Wait, CoD is hard?

I mean I blew through WaW on normal because I didn't like the game, but I never had a problem with COD4 or MW2. ...I had trouble with Black Ops though with the barrels in vietnam...

But past that, in the newer CoDs the game never seemed to get inherently harder the higher I set the difficulty. The only way I'd die is if the enemy got the drop on me in a door or they magically appeared on a roof when I stopped looking. I'm not saying I never died and I'm a super badass. I could just be a good shot, and not being shot at makes me live. I honestly never had a problem with CoD4 and up.

CoD2 on the other hand ...it tears my ass off and feeds it back to me through a straw. And then makes me replay the whole level over again because checkpoints are like cut in half...

About a year ago though, I made a promise to myself. I will only play on the hardest difficulty the game has to offer. Otherwise I just blow through games and hardly remember them, and I don't really take in all the game has to offer. I ignore unlockable difficulties though. And I will gladly step down the difficulty if it's too hard. ...like MGS2 "european super insane impossible alarms end game" hard.

In Black Ops? I find my team mates do very little. And they also refuse to push forwards unless you get to a certain point; and then they'll catch you up. This also happened in COD5, but not COD4 or MW2 - can anybody see a trend there?

Beating Mile High Club on Veteran is my all time favorite achievement. So exhilerating to have accomplished that.

Veteran isn't very challenging, it just requires you to be a tad more patient than the lower difficulties. Only stumbling point I had was trying (and failing miserably for 3 hours) to get the akimbo achievement on the level with the snipers, other than that it was smooth sailing.

I generally play on the hardest difficulties in games unless it's a genre I haven't touched in a long while. The hardest difficulties bring out the very best in player performance and the sense of accomplishment for beating the game is amplified tenfold.

I've always found the Call of Duty campaigns to be incredibly easy.
Just learn to use cover and find the good spots to show yourself, and you'll be fine.

It did happen in CoD 4 - just to advance them you had to be waaaay in front. And Modern Warfare 2 had the team that would do it all for you - glad they changed that.

I do them all on veteran just because it's become a tradition for me and there's a ton of gamerscore in it.

CoDs are just about the only games that I've found to be so easy on lower difficulties that I get bored. Veteran gives the game a challenge because you can't just sponge bullets, you actually have to take your time with cover and push back opponents.

The only time I felt like I had acomplished something in Call of Duty was Beating Hill 400 on veteren.

I've completed COD3, COD4, WaW, MW2 and about half of COD2 and black ops on veteran, once you get the whole twitch reaction thing down it becomes pretty simple.
