For the longest time, I ignored people on Xbox Live who use words like "gay" and "fag" as an insults or to describe things they don't like. Lately, however, I've been calling people out on it. So far, I've had two reactions.
Most of the time (and somewhat surprisingly), they just shut up about it. I tell the person it's not cool to use "gay" as an insult and the person shuts up.
The rest of the time, I just get ignored. The person doesn't respond to what I say and he keeps on saying "gay" and such. I'm not sure this is because I'm being consciously ignored or the person simply isn't paying attention.
The point is, I'm wondering if my new approach would be a good way to reduce the bigotry on Xbox Live. If everyone who is offended by racism, homophobia, and the like on Live spoke up, the bigots might not feel comfortable spouting their nonsense.
