Out of newspaper comics (which would be the "strip defined in the question")? Most likely. Out of all comics, debatable but has a shoot.

I wrote a research paper based off Calvinball for a philosophy class.

It also featured the greatest snowmen of all time
I always wanted to make one of those snowmen as a kid. I think I tried one time, but it just couldn't compare to the ones in the strip. I remember reading the books when I was about 10 and just barely being able to understand some of the social allegory in what Calvin was trying to say, even if only on a small level and not seeing the "big picture"... then turning the page and laughing my head off at Calvinball, G.R.O.S.S., or dinosaurs in F-15s. Such an awesome comic.

I personally like Foxtrot more.

But C and H is still fucking awesome.
Foxtrot is another great comic, but I'm glad AccursedTheory brought up why Bill Watterson quit Calvin and Hobbes, Watterson quit it before it got stale, much like how I think Foxtrot had become stale before Amend went to just doing Sundays. I think it's still great, but the artwork seems lacking and habitual and the jokes seemed to forced as if he's running out of ideas or wants to end it (Probably why Amend began just doing Sundays).

I...honestly don't think I could argue against that assertion. I grew up with the comic, and I remember January 2, 1996 being one of the sadder days of my life.

I'd say it was one of the greatest strips written. The commentary on current times was amazingly weaved into the humor of a 6 year old kid with a stuffed tiger.

I can't say whether it's the best ever (taste is subjective, after all) but I certainly loved it when it was originally run (and collected into books.)

However, I love that my daughter recently discovered Calvin & Hobbes, I bought her the first collected book last weekend after she'd mentioned she liked the comic strips (she'd read some of it in 4th grade at the library.)

Maybe when she's older she'll grasp Dilbert. :)

Well..

I'd seen that first one, but not the second.

Allow me to take the time to thank you wholeheartedly for saving my childhood.

Awwww I love Calvin and Hobbes, it was my Mom's favorite Comic when she was younger so she always had a couple compilations in the house I found one day.

I think my favorite recurring bit were the Snowmen. So creative and I always wished I could try doing it.

God bless you Bill Watterson

Calvin and Hobbes is the greatest comic strip ever, without any doubt.

I have no idea how Watterson managed to create such a crazily incredible strip, but he did, and he did it with such artistic integrity that I can't help but respect him for it. The man is one of the last, great artists, those with almost no thought for their personal gain. I'm really in awe of the man.

So if you have any Calvin and Hobbes merchandise or whatever those car window things are called, get rid of them. They go against everything Watterson and his strip stand for.

When the final strip ran in the Sunday paper, I actually cut it out and hung it up on my wall (as a teenager).

Yes, yes it is the best strip ever, which is why I own the entire collection (Far Side as well).

Calvin and Hobbes was a strip that every one could read and it would not get old.
Most other strips you can read and get a laugh out of but they are still talyored for a certain group of people. For better or worse is for the stay at home wife or family men. Dilbert is for the office crowed and their are comics that are for every body, but no one will perfect it like Calvin and Hobbes. It's funny drawings for kids and it's stories like about the hurt bird they find we'll miss.

It is amazingly funny in a morally deprived way. Calvin is a genius but no one really seems to realize it(like Stewie from Family Guy). Hobbes is a tiger that will claw your throat out if you don't make him a tuna sandwich. And of course, Tyrannosaurs in F16's. Yeah, it's the awesomest comic ever.

Yes.

For me, there hasn't even been another comic that's come close. Sure, Far Side and a few other comics made me laugh, but Calvin and Hobbes got so deep. Not even just when the philosophical sled rides and snowmen armies, but with little life lessons that even adults sometimes forget that they knew.

I dunno, it just made life SIMPLE, and awesome, like when you were a kid. I've read them for years and I still laugh at adventures that he had in his head. I mean, we ALL remember what that was like and how much fun it was! Other comics have witty punchlines that make you laugh for a few minutes, but Calvin and Hobbes is something you could read for a lifetime.

Dang...you're making me wanna go dig up my old...collection...

Ooh, and just for funsies:
