Sleeping dogs didn't actually sell very well, but that's more of development hell skewing costs. If a game enters development hell, there is little hope of making its money back.
Actually Sleeping Dogs didn't sell that badly at all. It's just didn't meet Square Enix's expectations but 1.5 million for a new IP(kinda)is pretty decent

OT:Of course it can. There have been plenty of successful single player only games this gen many of which have already been mentioned

I bet developers are pressured by publishers and console makers to include multiplayer features. It's hard to justify the existence of the new console generation without games that have multiplayer features. That being said I dont feel bad when a game "flops" with a million plus sales because developers could not reign in the costs on their project.

Hell, these days we just see Multiplayer games with tacked on single player mode. Remember that crapstorm named Brink? Personally, I believe that a game cannot be good without a solid single player (or co-op). I mean, I enjoy Assassins Creed, but the multiplayer means nothing to me. Every FPS I have based my opinion entirely on the single player experience whether it is good or bad.

So, yes, a game can survive without a multiplayer mode, because a large chunk of the gaming population does not NEED or WANT it.

That's the thing isn't it, SP games especially for the PS4 and X1 will have some form of multiplayer in them, be it full MP or Dark Souls & Dragons Dogma type SP - MP hybrid.

That's why I get so angry over ppl wanting Nintendo to be just 3rd party. The main Oasis for old fashioned single player and everybody wants it to fail and become just another Ubisoft / Capcom in this shit pile of an industry. I really don't get you guys at times, so what if they aren't cutting edge especially for online MP, it's a small price to pay for not been just another PS4/X1.

That's not to say there won't be SP games on the PS4/X1 but full priced AAA SP will be more of a rarity.

Yes, quite a few games.

Additionally, consider the fact that a few games with multiplayer attached to it were advertised with the singleplayer as a highlight. I seriously doubt that many people bought Tomb Raider for it's multiplayer, considering the fact that Tomb Raider has for the most part been a singleplayer series.

Same for Mass Effect.
Same for RPG's like Demon's/Dark Souls

Yes?

I mean, did you see the sales of Skyrim when the game launched?
It was phenomenal, and it was purely a single player experience.

I was surprised to see someone who's been a member here since 2011 asking this question, as I'm pretty sure this subject has come up a few times. The short answer is simply: yes, they can survive. It purely depends on the quality of the game itself. Case in point: the first two Arkham games, the Elder Scrolls series. Hell, Fallout and Dishonored, for that matter. But in terms of "why are multiplayer modes tacked on when not needed/asked for"? You kinda answered your own question. Part of it, at least. Sure, it does indeed give the companies an excuse to make more money with map packs and such, but then again there's some companies that give out multiplayer DLC for free. In a lot of cases, just because YOU weren't asking multiplayer to be added to (x) series doesn't mean that no one was asking for it.

I do agree, though, that I've got my doubts about Batman multiplayer...Batman is obscenely overpowered because he's supposed to be. When you're playing through the campaign, you're supposed to feel like you're frickin' Batman, Batmaning the fuck out of those poor thugs no matter what tricks they try to pull. They'll have to SERIOUSLY nerf him to allow the thugs to even have a chance. But in all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a handful of people that were asking for multiplayer in Arkham and so they decided to give it a shot. Who knows? Maybe it'll work and it'll end up being the next surprise multiplayer hit the way Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's multiplayer was surprisingly intense, fun, and entertaining.
