Two words:

Doctor Who.

So yes. A TV series CAN survive (and even thrive) after the death of the lead actor.
There's Taggart as well. That's now been going on a fair few years without anyone called Taggart being in it at all.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand is currently going through something similar. The actor who plays Spartacus (sorry I can't remember his name!) was diagnosed with cancer, and his doctors won't allow him to shoot the planned second season.

No, not if it's Spin City, Mike made the show, and using Charlie Sheen as a replacement killed it. And cartoons don't do too well either, I had just gotten used to Luffy's voice when 4kids screwed us over.

Wait!! When was HP a TV series?
Ahh, brain fart, sorry! Although HP is a relatively long running series (If you take each movie as an episode, there are more episodes in that than many britsh TV Shows)so my point still stands.

Dads Army is a classic example of a TV show in spite of having a strong ensemble cast didn't survive the loss of the character Private Joe Walker. James Beck died of alcohol poisoning inbetween the sixth and seventh series. While the first siex series are widely cited as classics the final three series are considerably weaker.

The Sopranos scripts were rewritten to include more of Livia Soprano due to the strength of her character, and they then had to factor in her death due to the impending passing away of the actor. If she had been more central it could have been problematic (Sopranso without James Gandolfini?!)

Theres been a mu-rder. Can't beat the early Taggart though, even if the production values were a little suspect
