Final Fantasy III is awesome, And FF IV will be out soon which looks to be even better.
And someone already mentioned that Chrono Trigger will be out next year. 14 different endings, you can't go wrong with that.
Mario Kart DS is great for replay, it's probably my most played game ever
Diamond and Pearl are good, but if you've played any Pokemon game before, don't expect anything different or spectacular.
Fire Emblem DS should be released outside Japan.. Eventually... And you can't go wrong with Fire Emblem. Best strategy game ever.

Do not go for Yoshi's Island. That game made me want to light myself on fire.

I highly recommend Etrian Odyssey for a handheld RPG. It's old-school in style and difficulty. (That's a good thing, to me.) The game is surprisingly addictive and long, especially considering that it's a handheld title. It's getting hard to find, however, like most Atlus games do. The good news is that the sequel, Etrian Odyssey 2, came out recently -- and it's still widely available.

If you want something more modern in style, Final Fantasy 4 was just re-made for the DS.

Fire Emblem DS should be released outside Japan.. Eventually... And you can't go wrong with Fire Emblem. Best strategy game ever.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is a VERY GOOD adventure game. Spiderman 3 on the DS is tons of fun. Ninja Gaiden: The Dragon Sword. The Final Fantasy 3 & 4 remakes are must- haves. there are a bunch of good games on the DS, don't give up on it man, you'll regret it.

Advance Wars: DS is pretty sweet and is probably in bargain bins by now.

Also worth getting the GBA Golden Sun and Golden Sun 2 - The Lost Age as you can play them on your DS and they are absolute gold as far as RPGs are concerned.

This. I rediscovered the soundtrack last week, and hearing it just makes me want to play through it all a fifth time, gah.
