Lawl, irony :p

EDIT: Sorry for the lengthy post FireAza, but was actually looking forward seeing Welcome to NHK and consequently being let down was rather disappointing :(
It's nice to see that I'm not the only one who makes excessively verbose posts, I was starting to think I was in the wrong forum :p
This gave me a chuckle :D

Anyway I've been recommending Suicide Club to everyone these days, even though it has its share of problems.
It completely lack understanding of how online games like Second Life function in reality, or the fact that half of the time you'd want to punch the main characters for being so damn unlikable!
But in the end it is just an amazingly beautiful shot film, with some extremely gut wrenching scenes that put the Hikikomori ways of Welcome to the NHK to shame :p
And also has a very powerful ending which is always a plus, so I definitely recommend.

The problem however is I just finished watching Claymore (don't blame me I'm ill :p) and I'm still not over my quest to watch as many animations as I can :)
The dilemma being in what to try next?

I'd have to recommend Gurren Lagann. It's just awesome. Elfen Lied is pretty good, if you're alright with brutal murder.

Aside from those, I'd recommend looking these up to see if they interest you:
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Azumanga Daioh
Neon Genesis Evangelion
FLCL (Fooly Cooly)
Pani Poni Dash
Excel Saga

Oh, I was alright with the brutal murders, that's so not what creeped me out about Elfen Lied.

It was all the incestuous overtones that freaked me out!
I mean wasn't Yuka the cousin, why the hell do they start dating!?
And then half way through the series I got the vibe they were trying to pull off Nyu as Kohtas dead sister or something, which would probably trump even Star Wars by incestuous creepiness.
I don't know I stopped watching around the middle, and yet it started with such a promising opening :(

The whole thing felt ridiculous, the story was a jumbled mess.
The characters seemed like they were pulled from one of those bad 90's cartoons where parents never really existed :D
If it wasnt for the occasional swear, nudity or dismemberment I would've though I was watching a kids cartoon :(

I really have no idea but I'm also pretty sure that every time an artist is made to draw this:
[HEADING=1]God kills a puppy![/HEADING]

Perhaps these haven't been mentioned yet:

Fuujin Monogatari
Hourou Musuko
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Le Chevalier D'Eon
RahXephon
Seirei no Moribito
Sky Crawlers (film)

But first, bask in my pretentiousness...(!)

The incestuous themes were kind of freaky. I don't blame you for disliking them. I don't know what was going through the writer's heads when they did that. I guess, since Kouta and Yuka made that promise when they were young, they were a little big clueless and as she grew up, Yuka began to get the wrong idea about things. But, whatever. That's just a theory that I made up off of the top of my head.

Well, kissing cousins isn't as uncommon as you'd think, in any case.

Did you watch Lucy's origin story episode? If you did, you'd know just how deliciously ironic your statement below the image is. In addition, you'd know that there's a reason behind them passing off Nyu as the dead little sister.

I think most of the story issues are the result of it being adapted from an unfinished manga. It gave it a decent concept, but they had to make changes in order to give it an actual ending. Once again, just a theory.

I don't blame you from being turned off from it. You're not missing that much, but I kind of liked it when I watched it and I saw that some others were recommending it, so I thought I might as well, too.

It's legal in Japan for cousins to date/marry. Just an FYI ;)

Get the studio ghibli collection.

Some very strong enviromental morals in there but they don't interfer too much with the stories.

I'd also reccomend something like school days for pure gure and sick fest.

Fooly cooly for the some of the most WTF moments you will ever have.

Bleach for a decently paced slash fest.

One peice for a very well written comedy.

Naruto if ninja powers is your sort of thing.

Gundam seed, for probably the most involved you will get in a story outside of deathnote.

Theres a few others i'd love to reccomend but my best advice is hit random episode on anilinkz.com, then click the anime go to episode 1 in the list, give it a watch and if you like it watch through, if it isn't your sort of thing hit random again :)

I haven't got as broad an anime knowledge as other posters here but I'll give it a shot:

Lucky Star - It starts of slow, and stays that way. It also makes lots of references to anime/games.

Azumanga Daioh - Again fairly slow paced but it is fun to watch.

High School of the Dead - A great series overall if you can cope with constant fanservice. One episode is just an excuse to see the girls naked...

Summer Wars - A fairly good film showing the evils of social networking.

I just watched a series called Seitokai Yakuindomo, I didn't know you could get so many sex jokes into 13 episodes...

As usual in these threads I'm going to recommend Welcome to the NHK.
It's my favorite anime. It's about a social recluse who meets a girl that tells him she can cure him and make him normal.
It's a comedy/drama/romance and it is very good.
It's got awesome music too.
Agreed
welcome to the N.H.K is an excellent anime about a shut-in with no social skill trying to break out of his mold and regain his place in societyy

In terms of genres maybe Dark Fantasy (Hellsing, Claymore, Vampire Hunter D, Blood: The Last Vampire, Berserk - A lot of gore :D ) and Sci-Fi (Ghost in the Shell, Ergo Proxy, Paprika, Akira) are my all time favourites, but I'm open to every and any topic or genre.
As long as it has solid story, doesn't boggle down in minutia and good graphics I'm open to it :)

I'm also interested in the more visually creative titles like Summer Wars, Blood: The Last Vampire, Whisper of the Heart, Paprika, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence and I would like to see more of those animes that are considered leaders in terms of art and animation.

I don't know if you only had to choose one anime series or film to take on a deserted island what would it be?

It's legal in Japan for cousins to date/marry. Just an FYI ;)
So the part that creeped me out the most in Elfen Lead, was actually considered the most normal one!?
That explains a lot... still creepy though ;P

From movies I loved the two Ghost & the Shell films, Akira and the two Vampire Hunter D.
Perfect Blue was amazing, also Whisper of the Heart and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

EDIT: Cheers to @SvenBTB, @deathbydeath and @hinataxemnas, thanks for the Claymore recommendation :)
Summer Wars if you like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, especially if you liked Digimon: Our War Game (second part of the Digimon Movie) because it's the same guy but telling it on a bigger budget and with a more engrossing story.

Also Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto because it's just awesome. Don't doubt me on that, you like giant robots, you'll like that.

Full Metal Alchemist. First watch the original FMA anime because it's awesome anyway and then go and watch FMA: Brotherhood which is the remake of it but it follows the manga more closely. The thing is, they both stand up as awesome shows in their own right.

Also if you're not bothered about cutey Magical Girl shows, definitely Cardcaptor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth (1 and 2 because you will not want to just leave at the end of the first season)

Hmmmm, let's start with a few dark fantasy recommendations:

Mnemosyne - "In 1990 Shinjuko, Maeno Kouki enters Rin's agency, Asougi Consulting, asking for help. Taking the case sends her into the lair of Aoyama pharmaceutical. This simple case is the catalyst for events that will take Rin to the brink of death. Unfortunately no matter how painful, Rin can't die through normal means and discovering that truth places Kouki and his family in danger. Rin and her associate Mimi are immortal as a result of their contact with the fruit of immortality. They have one natural enemy, the angels that men become when they encounter that same fruit. But Rin has a very personal demon who is bent on taking her down even if that means chasing her across generations of time. At the bottom of it all is a supernatural being named Apos with a secret that could unravel all creation." Lot's of gore and nudity, like the classic anime from the 80's.

Death Note - "Bored with his deteriorating world and the laconic way of his fellows, shinigami Ryuuk drops his Death Note on Earth and watches to see if it stirs up anything interesting. His plan succeeds beyond his wildest expectations when the Death Note is found by brilliant high school senior Light Yagami, who is also bored with a world he considers rotten. Although initially he regards the book as a prank, Light soon discovers, through experimentation, that the book's claim is true: picture a person in your mind as you write the person's name in the Death Note, and that person dies 40 seconds later of of a heart attack (although a different time frame and manner of death can be specified). Armed with that power, Light sets out on a quest he sees as noble: make the world a better place by eliminating all its criminals using the Death Note. Soon cast as the mysterious "Kira" (a Japanese pronunciation of the English "killer") in the media and on the Internet, some take exception to his playing god, most notably the police and the enigmatic master detective L, who resolves to do everything in his power to stop Kira. Light counters by doing everything in his power to prevent people from identifying or interfering with him, even if that means getting rid of people investigating him." If you want dark fantasy, this is it, it has a protagonist that would normally be the ANTAGONIST in any other series!

Baccano! - ""Baccano", which light novelist Narita translates as "stupid commotion", is Italian for "ruckus". Each of the stories in the series involves several unrelated plots intersecting and crossing each other as events spiral further and further out of control. Immortal alchemists, mafia operated speakeasies, and many other elements of pulp fiction are mashed together for a world straight out of the movies." Rather gory series, and the 1930's setting is just plain cool!

High School of the Dead - "The world is over taken with a very deadly disease that turns humans into zombies. In Japan, several students of Fujimi High School, and the school nurse, band together to survive this apocalypse. The story follows Komuro Takashi, one of the students who survived the initial outbreak." It may seem cliché from a Western viewpoint, but surprisingly, a traditional, George A. Romero style zombie anime has never actually been done until now. If you love traditional zombie flicks, you'll love HSotD. Be aware of all the jiggly tits and panty shots though, the guy who drew the source material normally draws pornos, so yeah.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Maebara Keiichi, a young teenager, has recently moved from the city to the rural village of Hinamizawa with his family. He is adjusting quite well to his new life, making friends at the small school, playing games, passing time in relative happiness, when suddenly a gruesome murder occurs... A mystery begins to unravel ? tracing back to happenings five years ago. As Keiichi learns more about these strange events, he wonders if he will be able to face the truth behind all of this." A murder-mystery series with a slight supernatural angle. Infamous for some rather brutal scenes.

Kino's Journey - "Composed in the form of a series of short stories, this is the story of the travels and observations of the human Kino and the talking motorbike Hermes. Kino and Hermes visit various fantastic countries - a country that can't coexist with others due to the development of telepathy (thus, a country that understands people's pain); a country striving to make everything equal, whose residents are extremely united (i.e., ruled by majority); and so on. Small ripples are formed in the everyday lives of the people living in the various countries by the appearances of the unusual Kino. These ripples gradually become a major influence, rattling the foundations of their normal lives. What will Kino and Hermes see in their travels? And what will be left in the hearts and minds of the people they encounter?" Not particularity gory, but covers some VERY dark subjects. By the time the second episode has ended, it's already covered cannibalism for the sake of survival. Excellent, thought-provoking stories, I strongly recommend it.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika - "Having a loving family, close friends, experiencing times of joy and times of sadness. These are the things that make up an ordinary life. Kaname Madoka is a normal 2nd year middle-schoolgirl who lives such an ordinary life. Until, that is, a strange encounter occurs. She does not know if this encounter is coincidence, or the vagaries of fate, but two things are certain... This is the moment when her destiny changes... This is the start of a new magical girl story!" No, really! Madoka is more of a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, and pretty damned creepy.

Pet Shop of Horrors - "Count D, a quite interesting pet shop owner from an area called Chinatown, sells rare and hard to come by pets to people longing for something special, but with each sale comes a contract. If the rules of the contract are followed, everything goes fine, but if someone should break the rules of the contract, the pet shop cannot be held responsible for anything unfortunate that might happen. Leon Orcot, a homicide detective, has linked many odd and unexplainable deaths together; they all were customers of Count D's pet shop, and he intends to find out why." It's a horror series, as the title implies. Not related to "Little Shop of Horrors" BTW ;)

Shigofumi - "Fumika is a girl with a job as a Shigofumi. This requires her to deliver letters from the dead; the last resort of relaying a deceased person's last message to his/her loved ones: family, friends or significant other. Together with her talking staff, Kanaka, she crosses the boundaries between the world of the living and the world of the dead in order to deliver the letters. But at some point, during a delivery, she gets seen by an old classmate who recognizes her. He then starts investigating what happened to her after she vanished from his class and why she is delivering letters from the dead." Not very gory, but death is the main theme of the show, so it's pretty dark.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni - "Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島). The head of a wealthy family named Kinzo Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzo's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo's servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered." - It's basically Higurashi no Naku Koro ni with that classic "murder-mystery on a deserted island" (described by the Haruhi novels well as a "closed-circle" setting) theme.

Sci-fi isn't really one of my favorite genres, so I'm unsure as to which sci-fi series I've seen that you would like.

I think yours and my interpretation of "visually creative" might differ here. ;) You're talkin' anime with technical proficiency and a big animation budget yes? Here's some of those then, no guarantees if you'd like them though!:

Air
Angel Beats!
Black Lagoon
Clannad
Death Note
Eden of the East
Electromagnetic Wave Woman and Adolescent Man
Hana-Saku Iroha
High School of the Dead
K-On!
Monster
My Little Sister Can`t Be This Cute
My Ordinary Life
Occult Academy
REDLINE
Time of Eve
Xam`d: Lost Memories
Full Metal Panic! Series
Anything Ghost in the Shell
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series
Gunsmith Cats

But really, any movie will be big budget. Or anything animated by Kyoto Animation :p

Not necessarily "normal", but not illegal under Japanese law ;)
