Just like the subject says I would really appreciate the above gesture. I've seen Dragon Ball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, mostly anything that appeared on Toonamis line up back in the day.

I could but I won't. There've been countless threads on this topic already, if you browse them you'll find any possible suggestion.
Alternatively, go to a database of Japanese animation (like Anime News Network or Anime-Planet) and look through the highest rated entries of your preferred genres (which would probably be far more effective than wading through other people's favourites lists)

Seirei no Moribito and Shamanic Princess are my two favorites. Am at work so I can't search for videos of them, though.

I'm not a major anime fan, so I can't really provide a big list, but Cowboy Bebop is an excellent show.

Yeah... depends, what is your definition of 'really good'?!

Anyway, I'm with Smertnik, go look up one of those databases, 'cos you'll get a fuckload of titles and a hell of a lot more than a couple hundred posts will be able to give you.

However, just to show you how highbrow I am, here're my recommendations: Usagi Drop, Ergo Proxy, GitS:SAC, RahXephon, Seirei no Moribito, Hourou Musuko, Haibane Renmei, Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain and Gankutsuou.

Enjoy...

List coming up:

Death note. I've never met a person who hasn't been completely pulled in by this anime. Watch it.
Clannad and Clannad after story. The most touching anime ever.
5 cm per second. A short movie. Touching.
Grave of the fireflies. A longer movie. Touching.
Tengen toppa gurren lagann. 26 episodes. Badass men and badass robots and toungue-in-cheek fanservice.
Welcome to the NHK. A series that explores deepre psychological issues. Very good.
Cowboy bebop. Chill stuff. Space age with a 1940's aesthetic.
Azumanga daioh. Funny.
Mitsudomoe. Funny.
Nichijou. Funny.
Lucky star. Funny.
Mawaru penguindrum. Deep and mindfucky.
Angel beats. Touching.
FLCL. 6 episodes. Mindfuck. Crazy. Awesometastic. Made by the same people who made TTGL
K-ON. Cute girls eating cake and drinking tea. Chill and fun.
Steins; gate. Awesome plot. Time travel and general awesomeness.
Usagi drop. A touching story of a man learning to live with a child.
Panty and stocking. Breaks the mold. Looks like Powerpuff girls, but with lots of sex and violence.
Hellsing Ultimate. Badass vampires fighting priests and nazis.
Baccano. Gangsters doing gangster things. Well-made.

I'm just going to say what I always say in these threads ever since I saw Baccano.

If you haven't seen Baccano go watch it, do it now, do it right now you silly person. Make sure it's the English dub, it's like one hundred times more awesome.

Let's see, something you'd probably like is Angel Beats. It has a great deal of action while also delving into the emotionally gripping grown-up subjects that make anime so damn interesting. It's also got the best theme song of any anime ever.

Also, if you want something silly and easy to watch, I recommend Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu to everyone.

For both of these, make sure you get the Japanese audio and English subtitles. The dubs are awful and really kill a lot of the humor (like a character from Angel Beats who only speaks in broken English while everyone around him speaks Japanese).

This whole list is great except for Death Note. Seriously, all you need to do is watch the first and last episode. Nothing happens. It's just a shitload of arguing and stuff.

"Just a shitload of arguing and stuff"?
That's like saying The lord of the rings is just a bunch of fighting and stuff.
The cat and mouse game between Light and L is what makes the series great. What makes it intriguing.
Sadly, the series starts to go downhill around the time Misa appears. And goes to shit when L dies. The first half is very good though.
The series is very good at tension and excitement.
It's not "just a shitload of arguing and stuff".

Okay, I can agree with all of that. My problem with it is it's bad at evolving characters which is an important aspect of anime. Nothing changes from the first episode to the last episode. The theme of morality revolving around Kira's actions is stated in the first episode and it never changes. There's no satisfaction of any plotline aside from, "Will Kira ever be caught?" The only character who had the opportunity to change was Misa, but she had her memory of the Shinigami erased, so that was nullified. The cat and mouse game did make the series, but once Light erased his memory of being Kira, that was gone. There wasn't a whole lot of suspense. That suspense finally returned once Light got his memory back, but L died right then and there. Mello and Near never really were established as characters that you cared about in any way, so to have Near just proclaim at the end, "We surpassed L. No, Light, you are not anything but a murderer. End of story."... It just sucked. I was very disappointed. So I would say, Watch Death Note if you're prepared to not have any satisfaction come of it.

Apart from my usual gripes about Guren Lagan (mebbe I'm just too uptight, but that series rankles at me severely)...

With Near and Mello, dear lord were they annoying (so much so I never finished watching it). Should've finished like the manga should've finished, with Light victorious and allowed to walk into the sunset with his evil manic grin.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Mind fucking and Giant Mech Fights.
Ergo Proxy - Philosophy and mind fuck and... awesome.
Welcome to the NHK - Hilarious, interesting and very insightful.
Nichijou - Randomly weird and hilariously funny.
Clannad and Clannad: After Story - Very very touching, funny and sad. I cried so much to these, especially AS.
Fullmetal Alchemist (Preferably Brotherhood in my personal opinion) - Awesome story and characters and fights.
5 Centimeters Per Second - Touching and beautiful.
Eden of the East - Very interesting and... just plain cool.

There you go! :D

Indeed, character development is not something that happens in Death note. But the focus is on the interaction between characters which they manage to do in such a brilliant way. And I agree that Light giving away his notebooks marks the beginning of an unremarkable period in the series. I stopped reading the manga at that point, and only really watched the anime to learn how it ended.
The point where Light regains his memory struck me as a flashback to the early points of the series. It was a return to what made the beginning of the series great. It was clearly something that the author had planned out in advance.
When the pre-planned even ended though, and L died, the series returned to the uninteresting nature that the series had gained after Light gave up his memory.
And the inclusion of Near and Mello...
I've met people whose favourite character was Near, and they actually make me angry. Well, more disappointed in their taste, but whatever.
The reason I'm recommending it is not because of the series as a whole. It is largely because of the beginning. Because I've never met a person who has watched the first two episodes and not gone "Fuck yes, I want to watch more".

That's true... even for me, the first dozen episodes were a fucking rollercoaster of a ride, but that's part of what was (I won't say 'bad') wrong with the series... it was such a massive let down post L, that in immediate hindsight, I plainly hated it... :/ Contrast that to... say, FMA:B. Most fans of FMA didn't like the beginning because it skirted over the first few arcs, but it warmed on them because the story was unrelenting, the character development and dynamic was evolving and generally very well paced. And having one of the best endings an anime of this length could have. (IMO, of course)

Indeed, I agree. I watched the first episode and it was starting to bore me. It had cool intro music though. I started watching the second episode. And HOLY SHIT! Fast forward to like 2 in the morning when I'm watching episode 10 or so and just going "Stop introducing plot things I want to see but are in the next episode!".

Overall it is pure awesome, but it has it's downsides at times. Not a really huge issue, but still worth watching. Sort of really falls apart after episode 26, however, they are better than being smacked in the head with a wooden board, so I'd have them. I wouldn't watch them but I'd have them.

EDIT: and I forgot to add the recommendation for Speed Grapher. And Garden of Sinners (a.k.a. Kara no Kyōkai). What else I wanted to say is either already there in the thread or will be suggested afterwards. Speed Grapher and Garden of Sinners don't get mentioned too often, though.

Reminds me of this friend of mine.
He didn't have a very positive attitude towards anime.
Whenever the medium was mentioned, he would say something along the lines of "Anime? Isn't that cartoon porn?"
I forced him to sit through the first two episodes of Death note one day.
The next time I met him, two or three days later, he'd watched the entire series.

It's so tempting to hate the series for what happened in the end. However, I can't not recognize the brilliance of the first part.
I just think those first episodes are something everyone should watch. Even though it might bring disappointment later.
It's just such a perfect example of how to do it right. The antihero/antagonist as main character thing and everything else.

It's a lot of the same reasons I recommend Azumanga daioh. I just think it's one of those series that should be a part of everyone's background knowledge.
Particularly Azumanga, since it sort of crystallized its genre and is a good introduction to the tropes of the medium.
We have this word/expression in Norwegian: "Allmendannelse." It's very hard to translate though. It means something almost along the lines of General/common education.
That last bit isn't true for Death note of course.
In any case, I need to get to bed now.
Fuck, I was supposed to study for a test. Well, whatever.
