Well, I'd love you to tell me how I'm meant to order these games, now that you've just made me smash my laptop to pieces.

In all seriousness, I am ordering these games as we speak, as well as others. Thanks for the suggestions, chaps and chapettes.

Pokemon Platinum should be under £20 by now I'd say, and thats a pretty meaty RPG to sink your teeth into if you're so inclined.

You can copy pasta?! You're clearly the hero of time, if not the messiah itself.

Any of the Ace Attorney games

Any of the Castlevania games, with special mention of Order of Eclessia

Dragon Quest IX

Final Fantasy Tactics: Advanced and Advanced 2

Any Fire Emblem game

Ghost Trick - This one gets a special note, as it's a great puzzle game with a surprisingly great story. Must buy

Lock's Quest

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey and Devil Survivor 1+2

Any of the Pokemon games, with special mention of Pokemon Conquest

The Professor Layton games

Radiant Historia - one of the best turn based RPGs that you will ever play. The combat is actually fun and intuitive, and the story is excellent to boot

Rune Factory - I personally recommend 1 and 3. 2 is alright, but annoys the fuck out of me because 2/3+ of the game is locked until you have a kid

The Dark Spire

There. I think that's good enough. That should last you a month or five :D
What he said, with added attention to Pokemon: Conquest. To everyone who whines that they never change up Pokemon, I give you Pokemon + Fire Emblem! (It isn't nearly as hard as Fire Emblem though)
It's really bloody easy actually but very enjoyable. Always thought of it like FF Tactics for dum dums though....

And they do change up pokemon, in black and white they took Salamence and thought "Well here we have an astoundingly powerful pokemon with a nice ability to bolster it's durability what can we do to make it better?"

And some wanker said "How about give it Moxie".

And thus there was a Salamence that got MOAR POWER for kicking your ass.

Well along with most of the games recommended so for I would also suggest Dungeon Maker and Sands of Destruction.
Sands of destruction is a more traditional RPG with a fun combat system and a really great story.
Dungeon Maker is fun but also just hilarious you find a magic shovel and use it to make a dungeon so it will attract people to your town.

Mostly joking, maybe 90-10 split on that one. I'm not a big nitpicker I just found that typo funny, though I am an ass :)

I see your Elite Beat Agents (a fine, fine game incidentally) and raise you Moero! Nekketsu Rizumu Damashii!! Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2. EBA was based off the Ouendan games, which you may guess are Japanese. Same principal, manic J-pop instead of Western tunes and an even more bonkers set of encounters in each level. Yes - that is actually the Ouendan squad appearing in a boy's dream, cheering him on to get over his bed-wetting. Manifested in Mario/Luigi knock-offs fixing plumbing and a giant Sumo wrestler holding back a dam. See also final encounter, where they cheer the entire world on to creating so much awesome good vibes and positive feeling around the planet it re-ignites the sun and averts a modern ice age.

Plus, you know, what everyone else is saying. At this point there's about a billion great DS games. Honourable mention goes to Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure: traditional 2D platform hacky-slashy shooter on the top screen and a match-3 puzzler on the bottom screen; featuring the world's greatest gentleman on a quest to find the Golden Suit. When he gets powered up enough he goes into Tea Time mode, yells "Good show!" and transforms into a giant stompy mecha with rocket fists. I'm not making this up.

captcha: I don't care if you're going to make me parrot ads for upcoming TV programs.. I'm not going to watch them! (What is Black Mirror about, by the way?)

Same here, I just bought 3 yesterday for the first time in forever.
I really enjoy Orcs & Elves. it's a first person turn based rpg. You can get it for like 2 or 3 bucks sometimes. I'm not sure if it's considered a rogue like, but it reminds me of one, you make one action a turn, and your enemies do the same. You should check it out if you get the chance.

I also got Okami Den but I have only played a few minutes of it. it seems good so far though

So short recap:

.Orcs & Elves
.Okami Den

This might be a really dumb question, but what's the jump like from the older Pokemon games (Gold being the last I played) to the newer DS titles?

I've seen some gameplay videos on Youtube and I feel like an old man just because trainers are now using two Pokemon in tandem.

Well there are now double, triple and rotation battles added to the mix. Double and rotation being my favourite, Triple is too prone to the wrong order fucking you over for my tastes. They're all fun especially with other human players and open up new alleys for competitive players like me (I don't do tourneys and shit but I do EV train and will battle friends gladly).

The biggest difference is that Special/Physical is now per-move basis rather than being determined by type. It's still turn based, it's still kind of slow but highly enjoyable and strategic. It does offer one of the best easy-to-grasp-hard-to-master games possible though, it's easy to just pick up one of the newer games and dive in being a vet (dw I played the olds too but my interest died in gen 4 and was picked up by 5 on the cheap...), but it offers some of the deepest and most meat and juicy gameplay available today, especially if you have the time for breeding and EV training to really get competitive and creative.

Pick up black or white, or wait for X and Y, you probably won't regret it. Especially if you're not like me and wish that the gyms used competitive tactics and were hard as nails.
