Can anyone recommend some good power metal?!?!?

Depends on what kind of power metal you want. If you want old-school, straight up power metal, Helloween is a good way to go, especially their two-part Keeper of the Seven Keys albums. Here's an excerpt, and easily their most well known song.

A good back-up for the classic sound, if you've heard Helloween enough, is Queensryche. They are mostly known for the song "Silent Lucidity", a power ballad, but that is far from their standard sound. They have a concept album, Operation Mindcrime, which I definitely recommend.

Finally, if you want a newer band with a more operatic sound, Nightwish is the way to go. They changed their sound a fair bit after changing lead singers, so I'll post a Tarja Turunen song, as well as an Anette Olzon song. They are on a third singer, Floor Jansen, but I am not familiar with any of their songs with her.

What qualifies as "overly nerdy shit?" I ask because after looking at my CD collection, I remembered that I have the taste of a 15 year old when it comes to metal. Besides everything Dio, my power metal stuff consists almost entirely of the cheesiest, over the top, and most generic fare 2000-2010 had to offer.

I'm talking D&D and nachos after school on a Friday night.

Sorry, I won't be of any help. Unless, maybe, you want nachos?

Delicious nachos. Tastes like nostalgia.

Not overly-nerdy? Okay, so that probably eliminates Rhapsody of Fire and Dragonforce, but what about Blind Guardian? They have a spectrum of nerdiness...although if you've heard power metal at all, they've probably already come up. But really, what counts as "overly nerdy?" Is it just "D&D- or Lord of the Rings-inspired (or similar)?" Are other literary (again, Blind Guardian, who've managed to reference John Milton and Robert Jordan in the same album) or scientific (Epica's Design Your Universe) references all right? I'm trying to think of any traditional power metal I listen to that's not like that, and I'm only coming up with Kamelot.

Is Viking Metal too nerdy? If not, you could check out Ensiferum.

Sabaton's also pretty freaking awesome, and I've been addicted to their Heroes album recently (unless an entire album about WWII stories is too nerdy).

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Sonata Arctica, but when they're on point, they're fantastic.

She kinda splits the difference, in my opinion: more poppy than Tarja, more operatic than Annette. Endless Forms Most Beautiful is a pretty good album (and title song).

Is Swedish Melodic Death Metal close enough?

I used to love telling people unfamiliar with metal that the band was really surprising in person, a bunch of french and english guys, all really small and introverted, but great with sound processing...

And then let them know that no, I was full of shit, and that they are all, in fact, vikings.

What is power metal? Isn't all metal power-driven?

To kind of answer your question, lately I have been into Otep. I love Halestorm. Also, you can't go wrong with classic metal bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and etc.

I don't care for either My Little Pony or Slipknot and yet, somehow, I enjoyed this.

Thank you for this.
Heh, I know right, its one of those things that works amazingly together.

A lot of what makes power metal would be defined as "overly nerdy shit". The best I can think of off the top of my head are:

Sanctuary

Nevermore

Rage

Drathnoxis

Can't go wrong with steel. Relatively cheap, but strong. Don't go with cast, it can be pretty brittle, if you want real power metal you need to get drop forged steel.

Tarot is a personal favorite of mine:
I like Hammerfall too, but that probably qualifies as "overly nerdy shit"

My interests are more in black metal, but let me see if i can suggest things that are power metal, or have the 'soul' of power metal:

not particularly close to power metal, but you might like

Since you don't want nerdy shit, let's go edgy. Most of these are examples of the somewhat darker side of power metal. Except maybe Ballistic, they're just kind of aggressive.

There's a lot of crossover between power, heavy, and speed metal so i didn't overly concern myself with the boundaries.
