A fanboy is one who takes his appreciation of the game to an almost unhealthy level.

You know that your opinions are reasonable so be happy, but no, you cannot stop other people from calling you a fanboy. All you can do is be patient with them and hope that they find the wisdom in their hearts to grab hold of the future with two fists and break the shackles of their own limitations.

If I like something thats all that matters to me, screw what anyone else may call me for it.
Completely off topic, but, your avatar and user name = EPIC WIN.

OT: that's how I feel about vampires right now. I can't like them without being called a fangirl, which is usually associated with Twilight. I find myself having to keep quiet more often that not about my passion for the handsome blood suckers, because I can't fucking STAND Twilight.

If you like the game, then it doesn't really matter, as long as you realize that the game, like everything else, has it's attributes and flaws, and there are many, many other games out there and they're all subject to opinion. I had an encounter with a fanboy once on Fanfiction.net... it was scary. For some reason, fanboys tend to cling to the word 'opinion' like a security blanket whenever someone disagrees with them, I've noticed.

Oh geez, another fanboy of "liking stuff."
Liking anything in any way automatically makes you its fanboy. The only acceptable attitudes, period, are hatred and indifference.

Or so they'd have you believe. Of course you can like something without being a fanboy, and you probably should. There is a certain level-headedness that the fanboy generally lacks, and if someone doesn't realize or can't accept that, it speaks poorly of them, not you.

Unless you are ranting and raving about how awesome the game is, and the second anyone tries to disagree, you jump down their throat about it, then you are not a fanboy.
Just shrug people who call you one off.

I think it's one of those things that relies on other peoples perceptions. For me, a fanboi is one who will not accept valid criticisms, or mis-applies positives. For some however, simply liking a (popular) thing will make you a fanboy.
E.g. for some, simply saying that you like Halo makes you a Halo fanboy.

For me, one is not a fanboy until the resort to defending their game by blasting others. Basically, to be a fanboy you must take your support to irrational levels.

We all have our favorite games, games whose value we have argued before others who do not share our love, and we are unabashed fans of these games (I have yet to be beaten when discussing the merits of Civilization II).

And then there are the games that we like, games that we had a lot of fun with, but not games that we considered to be the best we ever played (Assassin's Creed is the best example I can think of in my case). Yet, when I mention that such-and-such game was fun, I am labeled a fanboy, a title that paints me as a love-lorn supporter of said game.

Can I say that a game is a blast and maybe even point out the good bits without being called a fanboy? Or is doing so auto-condemnation to the ranks of fandom?

Non Fanboy - I like this game because.....

Fanboy - Fuck you! This game is the best ever period! All other games suck, If you don't like it its because you suck at it you noob!

Avoid fanboyism and I won't chop your bollocks off and use your scrotal sack as a coin purse.
Deal?

You like the game. That's all that matters. Your opinion might inspire someone else to enjoy the game too. Just don't go on forms saying its better than other games. And oh, Welcome to the escapist, dont go into the basment, they didn't warn me when i went down there
You poor poor man.
OT: Fanboys can essentially be trolls because they don't listen when their game takes criticism. If you are called a fanboy, but you haven't been a troll, then that accusation is unfounded, and therefore makes that person a douchebag.
Welcome to The Escapist. As stated above... Stay out of the basement. You don't want to know what is down there...

Yes but you will be accused of being a Fanboy regardless. In the world we live in, people find pleasure in discrediting your opinion because you like something. By being called a fanboy, the casual observer will see this and think "Well, I can't trust his opinion. He's biased because he is a fanboy." Actually, I think it is really only opposing fanboys or trolls who do this but still. Just don't go around gushing over your game and you will probably be taken seriously.

As long as you can accept that other people will hate it and you don't ram it down their throats why they are wrong, you are safe from fanboy-ism, IMO. That doesn't mean you can't defend yourself by saying "I liked this and that about it." Also, you can love a game to death and not be a fanboy as long as you aren't obnoxious about it. There is a difference between fan and fanboy.
