If anything running it online would have more problems because you gotta depend on an internet connection to run it.

In this thread: people that don´t know how much of an impact Minecraft can have on your Memory and CPU

Seriously, the graphics may don't look like much, but my gaming pc that can run all the latest games on Ultra High settings sometimes has problems with running Minecraft.

Minecraft is a deceptively hungry beast.
Too true, it really can be pretty heavy. I have a Core i5-750, 8 GB of RAM and a 9800 GT, and on Fancy graphics, it can dip pretty low. I typically run it on Fast, since, three-dimensional clouds and transluscent leaves don't mean much to me.

It can be occasionally annoying, but if you lower the range of the game just about anything should be able to run it fine. The only real problem is that it can be a drain on RAM if you explore way too far... Or set all the trees on fire.
