Not sure why you'd be worried, GOTY is just a label that hundreds of gaming outlets use. Given the relative dearth of new truly awesome games this year, I'm pretty sure both will win lots of wards. Both will probably win a few gaming Bafta's too.

I'm not a fan of The Witcher, tried 1 and 2 and the gameplay wasn't really for me. MGS I am a fan of, have been since MGS1, and after playing Ground Zeroes and loving Peace Walker (being probably my favourite in the franchise, especially after the "why isn't this one just a movie" MGS4*) I am very much excited and looking forward to Phantom Pain. Even more so I know it will probably run on my laptop, as it ran GZ fine on high.

*I do like MGS 4 and the gameplay was great, but even as a fan of the series the cutscene/gameplay ratio was too cutscene for me. It had maybe 3-4 hours of gameplay and more than double that in cutscenes, which was shame. At least story wise EVERYTHING was wrapped up, even if it was convoluted as shit.

I'm not going to get into the GOTY argument because, frankly, it's totally subjective, but I've been playing Witcher 3 and I'm actually shocked how much you DON'T really need to know a ton about the lore and the previous games to understand it (which I'll admit was a huge issue with Witcher 2). As long as you're willing to read the character descriptions and watch the opening intro sequence, you don't really need any prior knowledge to understand the game (at least so far).
I've heard that too but I'm not sure how much that will matter when it comes to brand new players to the series. The Witcher 2 gave the series that reputation and even if 3 fixes it, I'm guessing that rep will stay attached to it.

If it can break that rep, that'll be a big point in The Witchers favor when it comes to the popular GotY vote.
I dunno, I get the feeling that the fact that it was released on all platforms at once will be a big boom, Witcher 2 didn't see a console release until just under a year after the initial PC launch, and a few months after the PC enhanced edition (IIRC that is). With the promotional material going out all at once I think the 3rd installment stands a much better chance of drawing new players in than the 1st and 2nd did.

Side note, I'll add my voice to the growing number saying you don't need to have played the others in the series. I got through maybe 50% of 2 and never played the first one, and not having any issues at all understand 3 so far (around 12 hours in).
