idk it's just fun to kill people online in call of duty while "imagine" by John Lennon is playing. I always play online multiplayer with the game in mute and my "music I like" playlist going on youtube.

PvP in WoW to generally heavy music.

It makes you incredibly reckless, but it sure puts you in the zone :p

It depends, if it is music from the game then perhaps, but any other music playing would probably be a distraction.

The same thing happens in sports. The best don't think about what they doing they just do it. I can see music helping like this in a game situation. Most likely the music is relaxing you and allowing you to react more instinctively to your surroundings, instead of thinking through your playing.

Probably not, but the right music can certainly make a game more fun.

You'd be surprised how...right it feels to be scything through enemies as a City of Heroes Scrapper or Brute, with "<url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JZ9djZa180>Bodies" playing in the background...

Well while Playing Gran Turismo 3, they had the song Kickstart My Heart on the soundtrack. Every time that song would come on I would be able to beat my best lap time by a second or more.

I tend to play multi-player games better with a good podcast going. Usually either Kevin Smith's smodcast or The Phil Hendrie flashback.

Hm...not really. I've never really come across a game where the music stood out so much that I got pumped and did better. Well, I have played games with amazing soundtracks but I don't think they made me do any worse or better.

I will go so far as to say that music can make me enjoy a game more, and if I'm enjoying it, chances are I'm paying it better attention, and consequently doing better.

However, if this is true, than music which I hate in a game can actually make me worse at it.

I think it definitely affects how you play the game and your performance in it. Usually I think its the scary music that makes me feel far too focused on everything all at once out of tension and fear... then something will always come at me and I'll never see it coming.

then I have to clean up the tea/drink that I knock over when reacting

To add to this discussion...

I'm one of those who think Halo is merely average but even I respect it's musical score. From time to time playing it the music would help suck me into the drama (that the music implied was there, but was not)

Music can make ALL the difference.

Most definitely! Good music makes me get into the game more, whereas shitty music kinda kills the atmosphere.

I used to listen to music while I played 2142. more to block out the spam of "enamy spotted" but I think it made my reflexes a bit more jumpy too.

I tested that one back in the 4th grade.

Results were inconclusive, but that was mostly due to the fact that I forgot to account for a few variables.

Maybe I should try it again?
