For LPs, I don't care how good they actually are, as long as they understand that sometimes it's best to edit out mistakes.

I mean, I think showing yourself dying hilariously at a hard part can be ultimately quite interesting, and informative to boot- But I don't want to watch someone falling off that cliff 20 times in a row. The best one I saw (A few years ago, might have been Prince of Persia? Or, uh, Enslaved? I dunno.) would show me their first death at a given point, then skip to footage of them actually succeeding.

I don't even mind if they tell me they jumped ahead, as long as they spare me the annoyance of watching them stumble around for ten minutes.

Considering one of my most popular videos are of me stupidly fucking up at PS1 Spyro games (easy games, but a time when I haven't touched the games in nearly a decade), it's not just for the pros. I uploaded the videos just to poke fun at myself and give others a laugh if they ever made stupid mistakes. I do get a few "omg u suk" comments, but these videos weren't made to show off my best moments. Sorry you didn't get the message when "FAIL REEL" is emblazoned in capital letters.

As for other LPs, some of the ones I watch I would consider myself better. Doesn't bother me. Sometimes it can even be pretty funny. I'm more of a casual viewer though, so I'm not looking for a walkthrough or a highlight reel. I just wanna watch a dude play a video game. Screw ups are bound to happen.

I think a lot of "experts" only post their good games, and not the ones they got shit-kicked in. (See: Call of Duty)
Well DUH...

Thats one of the most obvious things I have heard in the escapist... of course most people posts their "Expert" moments only. And really, if it was REALLY "expert", then they deserve it. It dosnt matters if they failed 99999 times before. They are experts now. Supposedly...

Well except for that one video of the final boss in the original dead space where the player actually lost and filmed it and put it on youtube for some unkown reason, it really made me LOL hard.

I think watching a walk through where the person is bad is actually more fun more often than not. or at least when a person has a good personality. like bluexephos, blacklightattack, when rob moran was putting videos up (hes really kinda stopped but I guess his life has gotten in the way abit but hes supposed to come back with vids on his site at least and hes working on someting bigger), etc.

So i dont have a problem with you being bad as long as you have a good perosnality. if you want to watch the best you find the best. if not youre just being a dick if youre not being constructive. the one thing I dont like is watching a guy like hardyt3kyoyo with little personality who routinely fails but feels the need to say they're good when they havent really proven anyhting to show they are. but even then, htat just means I watch to laugh when something goes wrong and makes them upset.

The guys I follow doing lets say LPs, I do it mainly because they are funny, Not because they have some uber leet frags to show me, There's montages for that..

Not that I watch much montages nowadays anyway, Most of them are overedited and doesn't show skill.. I'd rather watch raw gameplay with voiceover or something..

But no you don't need to be 1337swaggaproquickscopingstarcraftleetdiamondleague to post content to youtube, Most of my subscriptions aren't really good, I watch them because they are funny/Have interesting things to talk about

I don't even really understand the culture of it all, it smacks of being a poser, and that brings along with it a certain bucket of arrogance, so it's maybe not surprising there are these reactions...

The only ones I can bring myself to watch are the more parody type - both the outright take-offs of the worst, cliched, but for-serious MLG vids (like the Train Simulator one with Skrillex over the top...), and those where the play style is... let's say a bit unconventional, e.g. the "is it genius or simply insane" stuff by Birgirpall and co...

Watching your friends play games when you can't join in is boring, no matter how good they are, unless they also make it entertaining in its own right somehow. Why does videoing it make it any different?

That's perfectly fine as a reason for deciding what you want to watch. But why does this so often become a reason to drop a down-vote, post an abusive comment or troll someones content, when it could more rationally end by clicking 'back'?
That's a question that could be applied to basically everything in the world. And while it's a valid point, the reality it is that it's simply not how people behave, not for random videos on the internet nor anything else.

People like criticizing others, it gets them feeling superior. You'd have to get into some psychology studies to work out the details, but personally I don't care too much, it is what it is.

Absolutely not. Some LPers are entertaining precisely because they're complete amateurs. Simply watching an idiot try to play a game can be mildly funny and in some instances completely hilarious.

And for those of intermediate skill, well they can do all sorts of entertaining things with games.

I don't think you should post gameplay merely to show off how good you are, even if you are the best player in the world.

Having youtube videos of playthroughs are always useful, especially for me when someone like me wants to catch up on the plot of a game for the sequel, like The Darkness which wasn't on PC while its sequel was.

Gameplay videos of how to get the high score or what ever is okay in my opinion, such as I watched a video of how to get A+'s on all Hotline Miami levels with the chicken mask on.

It's pretty simple:
- if you put your stuff on display it will get critiqued
- if your stuff is shit people will call it shit

Ergo:
- if you don't want your stuff to be called shit then you probably should make non shit
- if you don't want your stuff to be critiqued then you probably should keep it to yourself

Pretty much this, but with an editing for the internet:
- if you put your stuff on display on the internet it will get critiqued
- A good portion of that criticism will be people calling it shit, no matter how good or not it is.

Ergo:
- if you don't want your stuff to be critiqued then you probably should keep it to yourself
- if you still want to share, you need to thicken your skin.

I've put up a couple of videos, some competitive play in a league for CoD, and some stuffing around in G-Mod, very few views, very little feedback. And hey, I made some of my friends laugh. But if someone thought it was bad, or told me it was bad, I wouldn't give a shit. I don't read YouTube comments, let alone ones posted on my channel. That's just noise I don't want.

Yes, obviously they're allowed. Others are allowed to call them out on it being a bit pants, too.

Ever been on youtube? Look how "pro" PewDiePie is on hes videos and how "well" he is doing.
There are crap, beginner, non-pro vids youtube full. Specially fail and learn vids are very popular.

If you want upload material to youtube, NEVER read the comments.
Also people have the issue thinking they are entitled to quality content given to them, instead of finding it themselves.

Any one can upload anything they want to youtube. Just look at some of the LoL and WoW videos/guides. Specially PvP content.
Is it succesfull and popular that is different thing. But generally do not bother reading Youtube comments, even when watching someone else's videos - they never lead to anything good.

Let's Plays are not for you to show of your skills and streaming while used for that doesn't have to be either they are there to entertain. Can you entertain people? Then you can post gameplay footage online.

And that's fine. I'd guess you'd only look for Pro Players than.

But the point of this thread is what do you think of people who go to things that are not advertized as being played by expert players and then leave negative comments that they are bad at the game.
