Well yeah, I played final fantasy 7 and finished it this year without playing it back when it came out and I enjoyed the hell out of it! I think nostalgia can ruin a game for you if you go back to play it after a long time of remembering it to be the holy grail and then you get a old game which doesn't live up to your expectations!

I grew up on awkward cameras and bad polygons, so I can pick up an old game, even one I've never played before, and still enjoy it (Ive been picking up a lot of ps1 games which I missed out on due to my parents only letting me have one system when I was a child). Somebody who's first system was an Xbox probably wouldn't be able to tolerate games like Mario 64, OOT or Goldeneye.
As for 2D games, there are enough of them on the market which sell pretty well today, so it seems they still hold up pretty well.

For me, not at all. I really ONLY play them for nostalgia. Take that away, and I may as well junk a perfectly working snes. I'm more of a current-gen gamer.

Yes, any fan of video games can still appreciate Pac-Man, Pong or Angry Birds and still have a lot of fun, I mean how many of you can actually nostalgia over Galaga or Space Invaders?
Question: Why is Angry Birds listed? Yes its fun, but its not that old....

Yes. The reason you liked the games originally is because it was good. One of my favorite games is Metroid 1 on the NES and I've never played it when I was a baby.

I'm playing X-COM: Enemy Unknown, from 1994. Picked it up from Steam. Data graphics and music, runs in a DOS shell, but there's just something about turn-based strategy and the base and research systems that still appeals to me today.

Depends on the time frame your looking at with "retro" games.

Homeworld (1999) and Homeworld 2 (2003) I feel have both stood the test of time and I still recommend either of them to RTS fans. (Currently replaying HW2 atm).
What sucks is that HW2 doesn't like Windows 7, I think it might work on Vista but I am not sure on that one
Funnily enough I have win7 ultimate running HW2 with no problems, I did have to get a fix for some camera lag issues but that was about it.

Yes.
The only games I remember from my childhood are Sonic the hedgehog, and Golden Axe.
While I don't dislike them, there are about a million retro and retro-style games that I love much more than them. No nostalgia, no nothing.

I'd played several games that have been more than fifteen years old and I've enjoyed even when it was the first time I played them.

Depends. If were talking about graphics, the ones that were the cutting edge of graphics age really badly. As for game play, I think that old FPS games where you ran through corridors first person in a way that was very 2D-ish, I think that it would age poorly because it is very linear. But usually, I would think that most other games that aren't shooter would age well. I think that some games do age well though. for example Ocarina of Time. I'm not nostalgic about Zelda games because I didn't used to play them. I suddenly had the urge to download Ocarina of Time onto my computer and started playing it this year. I was very impressed. The graphics didn't repulse my with their aged old cutting-edge style like most others would have and the game play was still very good. Still on par or even better than many games that are on the market today. (imo)

I believe that yes they can. I played Chrono Trigger for the first time a few months ago. Amazing game.
This game holds up so well every port of it is the same. The graphics are good, the story great, and the characters are all great as well.

It depends on the games. I recently bought Duke Nukem 3D (before playing the DNF demo and deciding against buying that) and it was awesome. Similarly, when I pull out my SNES and play Super Mario World or Super Metroid, it's still fun. It's all about how they're built that determines whether or not they hold up.

Also, games like the original Half-Life and Deus Ex do hold up although parts of them are clunky sometimes. And nostalgia can't really mess with me that much since I got HL1 around the Orange Box's release and Deus Ex last year.

I started gaming on an Amstrad CPC464, so I have to say absolutely not. I certainly would not care to play any previous gen console games, though I am partial to older RTS PC classics such as Stronghold 2.

It's just like any movie, show, or book; over time the greats live on and the shit gets buried... unless it's soooo shit you gotta try it. Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario 3 are still in my top 10.

Most of the classic games on the NES and SNES hold ground just fine.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Metroid
Zelda
Mega Man 3
Super Metroid
Chrono Trigger
Mario RPG

Retro-style games can work too:
Mega Man 9 = Awesome

Depends how iconic the game is and the players' gaming interests. Some games people say are classics I simply can't play because I don't have the nostalgia bug as I have never played them. Deus Ex is a good example for me.

Megaman 1-6 on the NES are, and always shall be, a challenge.

They are still very playable.
Change that to megaman 1-4 then we're going somewhere. 5 and 6 were just poorly made and brought nothing to the series.
I still think that Chrono Trigger is one of the most enjoyable JRPGs I've ever played. I think we need more games with cooperative attacks like that. Screw fancy summon monsters. let the player characters be the fancy ones
