First off I am English so my understanding of American polotics is limited so keep this in mind if I get stuff wrong.

Now I have been on The Escapist a while and most of the Americans I have spoken to have been intellegent people. There have been a few who have Monkey shit where there brains should be but no more than people from other countries. Anyway I was super bored at work today (had nothing to do and my boss was out of the office) and I was checking up on the news and there was alot of stuff on the Republican nomination race. After reading some of the things these guys say I have to wonder if the intellegent Americans I have spoken to are in a very small minority, For fucks sake half of them cannot even read and speak properly.

Do not get me wrong, British politics is far from perfect and I would be here for about an hour if I started talking about the problems I have with my government, but at least we seperate religion from politics. I respect everyones right to belive what they want but if I had to live in a country where the laws were made based on the religius views of one group I would move. Quickly. Hell just read what one candidate said conserning abortion.

Mrs Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman and mother of five, said she would be "the first president of the United States who has willingly participated with Lord God Almighty in bringing forth human life"
So How the hell do these people get elected into positions of power?

Edit: I have reposted this in religion and politics. My bad.

There are a lot of Christian voters in the US who feel differently than you do about such things. How is this surprising to anyone?

Unfortunately, pretty much this. There are quite a few Christians who believe the whole "congress shall make no law establishing a religion" part of the constitution does not apply to Christianity. It's sickening, really. These are the same people who have problems when Muslims so much as blow their nose in an airport.

I'm among the Christians who believe that, regardless of what the subject is, if your position on it comes from a religious value then it does not belong in the law. Things like abortion and gay marriage should be decided on in a purely secular fashion, all religious values aside. You are allowed to have your opinions based on whatever you like, but to impose your religious values on someone else through the letter of the law is inexcusable.

Personally I think Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry are both ignorant bigots who have no interest in solving any problems of REAL value, due to their harping on gay marriage and overall lack of knowledge on everything else. But because of that and how well they've managed to isolate themselves from the average conservative voters it's very unlikely either will get the nomination. Personally I'm on the fence as to how I'll vote, but if either of them somehow manages to get the nomination I'll vote for anybody but them. I'll make a party dedicated to breaking the constitution and getting George W. Bush a third term before I vote for them.

The same way Democrats get elected. Simply put, a Republican gets elected if a majority of voters like what the Republican has to say more than what the Democrat has to say, and vice versa. Just because a voter supports a Republican candidates doesn't mean the voter supports everything the candidate says or does.

Side note: the thread probably belongs in the Religion & Politics forum.

Same way that Democrats get elected: By using fear tactics and false promises.
