like how do you use them, for instance, as i have already got everything on my PC such as OS, games and other software, what use does the SSD serve?

from what i know, it loads programs more quickly and can do more simultaneously. like so.

but they're a lot smaller and a lot more expensive than regular harddrives.
might be a good idea to put your OS on the SSD and the rest on regular drives.

I have windows on my ssd everything is super fast, I actually managed to fit some games on it too Deus Ex loads in like 5 seconds while my friend is moaning at me on skype that it takes forever to load hehe. :3

It's just like having a second hard drive that is super fast.

the SSD is much more advanced than the HDD and works alot better & faster, but they have a very limited size and can be very expensive.

SSD is an upgrade to the HDD in every possible way execept the prize.
SSD is faster (reduce windows boot-up)
SSD is smaller (laptop harddrive format)
SSD consumes less power
SSD lasts longer (no moving parts)
SSD is ten times more expensive

I'm going to use an SSD as my PS3 harddrive.

They are faster than traditional HDDs due to the fact they do not depend on the mechanical parts, like HDD has spinning discs, they also don't require power to retain the memory.
It's pretty much extended flash with some RAM features, providing much faster access to data. The problem is the price, as 1TB SSD is 3-4 times more expensive than 1TB HDD.

so how would i go about putting my OS on my SSD when its already on my hard drive, wont that fuck up my computer?

A Super Star Destroyer is the largest battleship in the Imperial Navy.

Wait, wrong acronym.

You'd have to reinstall Windows. You don't sound like you know much about computers so I can't see it being worth your while buying an SSD.

You would have to reinstall everything and make sure the ssd drive is the windows destination when you reinstall it. You can back everything up on a flash drive while you change it over.

I'm sure there is probably a guide somewhere if you google for a bit :)

HDDs don't need power to retain their memory and you should check the price of SSDs, a 1TB SSD is almost 100 times more expensive

Let's call it a faster hard drive, but as the tech is new the cost is astronomic compared to hard drives.
So the best use is to have a small high quality SSD for your OS and programs and a huge HDD for all the rest, but don't go cheap on SSD because the low price ones are not very fast and they will break down far too soon.

Basically a fast hard drive, although they're hugely expensive even at fairly small capacities.

The big benefit is their speed and the fact they have no moving parts so they are safer to use especially in laptops were moving the computer might course the HDD's needle to slip and corrupt the data. SSD remove that problem with the "no moving parts"

In short they are faster and safer so as previously mentioned use it as a "third tier memory system" (cpu, ram, SSD) storing only the most important or frequently used data on it

If anyone's planning to put their OS on SSD, don't forget to change your swapfile settings so that there is NO swap on the SSD and the swapfile instead is on your HDD. Also, you'll want to put your web browser's cache on the HDD. This is because SSDs have a far smaller lifespan in terms of write cycles than HDD, and putting frequently changed data like swap on an SSD is going to make bad sectors start appearing much sooner than they otherwise would.

As someone who bought a netbook with an early 16GB SSD that is slow as all hell, I must warn against just getting a cheap one.

Most hard drives these days come with drive cloning software and decent instructions, but the relatively small sizes make it a bit more complicated than simply moving everything over.

Personally I'm not going to bother until my current machine becomes obsolete in about two years.
