1d is a profile, like a profile drawing
2d is like a mario sidescroller
3d is what we live in now
4d is where there are actually effects ie mist in the movie theatre or water etc

I really hope I got this right

1D: line
2D: square
3D: cube
4D: either time, or some complicated maths stuff that will lead you all the way to 10D. I'm not gonna try and explain that. Google is your friend.

This is the response I had to give as my initial response

You couldn't just, like, put `dimension' into google?

Here, I'll save you some time and link to the relevant wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimension

just looked it up

1D = 1 demeiosn width/height/depth
2D = 2 deminsions width/height like a square
3D = 3 deminions all 3
4d = Time yeah u heard me

Really? Or just trolling (bady at that)??

1. Object has a measurably lenght but no other properties eg. a line
2. Object has measurable length and breadth eg a drawing on a page

Important to note that these to above really dont exist everything in the physical universe has 3 measurable dimensions.

3 length breads and depth... anything with physical form.

4th dimension is time

Or

1D is a single line ( one axis), where every point in on said line
2D is the area between 2 axis , like on a sheet of paper or a map
3D is the area between 3 axis , the easiest way to imagine this is that we live in a 3 dimentional world
4D is time , what affects me ( 3D)from being at point A and point B ( say from the left side of my room to the right side of the same room) is time.

1D is a point, or one dimensional measurement, so pretty much a line.

2D is two dimensions, say width and height, so something like a sidescroller or a cartoon, like south park, is two-dimensional.

3D involves three dimensions, adding depth to width and height. This is the spatial dimension we seem to find ourselves in.

4D is either considered to be Time added to the previously mentioned 3 dimensions, or a crazy confusing extra-spatial dimension involved in string theory...or something.

I'm no physicist but I think these are right, feel free to correct me.

This Video does a great job of (kind of) simplifying the concept

Then why bother with the thread?!

OT: The answer I was going to give was done otherwise succinctly while the back-up has already been done... if a bit less eloquently than I would've liked...

1D is something that can only be measured in 1 way, such as length, depth or height. Saying a line is a bit iffy, because you can't actually imagine a 1D structure.It could be infinitely long, but with no depth or height, you won't be able to see it. But, I can't think of any better way to describe it, so a line it is.

2D is when something has 2 measurable/visible dimension. This could be a line you can actually see, because it's got length, but also height so it's visible.

3D is when you can measure something in a third dimension, such as by adding a depth or width to it. This is what we see (sort of. What we actually see are 2D images and our brains just project 3D 'real space' onto it)

4D is awkward as all hell, see this man draw a 4D structure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccws454YiVM

Now that i read this isn't it weird that everyone says the 4D is time. I mean from what i can gather
1D = length or width or depth
2D = length and width or length and depth or width and depth
3D = length, width and depth
and all of a sudden 4D is Time what happened to the other 3
shouldn't 4D be length, width, depth and time

So if time was a dimension couldn't it be part of 2D like say length and time (we can graph it its called velocity) it doesn't necessary need to be the 4D.

Yes. When people are listing up to 4D you are correct in that they are using a shorthand for `the three spatial dimensions + the time dimension'.

Yes. Of course it can be the 2nd dimension. It's just that people hear about special relativity and then assume that when someone is talking about the `4th dimension' they always mean time. And that dimension generally means Cartesian spatial dimension...

1D is One Dimension. Up down, or Left & Right.
X or Y on a graph.

2D is Two Dimensions. Up, Down Left & Right.
X & Y on a graph. (Side-scrollers, flat objects in pictures etc.)

3D is Three Dimensions. Up, Down, Left, Right, In & Out. X & Y & Z. (almost all modern games, everything in this world is also 3D)

4D is the Dimension occupied by Time & Space, X, Y & Z. We live in harmony with the 4th D. But not in it. It's speculative that some particles travel through the 4th Dimension when the spontaneously disappear and then reappear elsewhere at another time in our 3rd Dimension.

In movie terms you are correct, in scientific terms the 4th dimension is the passing of time.

A dimension usually refers to a measurement such as width, length or height (all relative and interchangeable though) but you really should know.

It kinda bugs me how everyone refers the the 4th dimension as time. You know that was invented by H G Wells for the novel The Time Machine, right? It doesn't really hold any scientific purpose in all honesty.

If people are talking about spacial dimensions, the fourth dimension should be another spacial dimension. Some scientists actually think we live in a 4d world (just that the 4th spacial dimension is much smaller than the others so we can't see it). I don't understand it at all myself, and I don't remember the link, y'all can google it if you're interested.
