It was more ambitious then previous games and some later games for that matter. Plus the darker story and themed sections of the world really kept me interested. As far as the time limit gameplay element is concerned i was initially turned off by this. It wasn't until years later(and i mean years) that i truly appreciated it for how great it was. Now having said that i still think that windwaker and TP are the superior zelda titles(and im still hoping Skyward Sword blows me away).....but I would put majora's mask(or OoT, can never truly make up my mind) in third place most likely

What I don't understand, is how people completely disregard TP and Wind Waker in the great Zelda debate.
THANK YOU!
OoT used to be my favorite Zelda ever, but Skyward Sword completely blew it away in my mind.
Not only is Skyward Sword amazing at what it does, it does something that
no game has ever been able to do before, ever; make OoT look bad. That sounds bad, and I'd be happy to explain it, but I cannot unless you have played Skyward Sword =|
Can you explain if I'm about halfway through?
Skyward Sword brought to my attention three things:
1. The combat in OoT is really rudimentary, very basic, and kind of sucks. You can basically flail your sword around on
any enemy in the game, and it will eventually die. Yes there is some strategy involved with killing bosses and some enemies (like Skulltulas for example), but that is usually "whip out X item and the enemy is neutralized". In Skyward Sword, you can't really casually kill any enemy. Especially endgame when
almost every single fucking enemy requires a thrust to kill. Trust me on this; get very good at thrusting, because you will fucking need it.
TL;DR: you can't flail your sword around in Skyward Sword, you have to know what you are doing.
2. There is next to no character development in OoT. I love OoT to death, but you don't really care about any of the characters, or get into their lives at all. Majora's Mask realized this and made it the entire point of the game. Skyward Sword is a happy balance between OoT's indifference towards characters, and Majora's Mask's obsession. You get into side quests to save random items and people, talk to people about their concerns, and you can actually engage in the random meatbags around you. I love the shop keeper in skytown because whenever I go to buy something and say "actually nvm..." he gets PISSED. That is such a nice little detail. And when you walk into the item check lady's house, she goes "uhh... why are you in my house? you shouldn't just do that, its kind of rude..."
TL;DR: Skyward Sword actually has people around you to care about, they are not just random pixels.
3. OoT doesn't use the landscape enough. I don't just mean Hyrule field or the climb up Death Mountain, I mean every piece of terrain you come across. In OoT, you can tell what is important, and what is not: explode that wall, climb that vine, walk here, don't go there, etc. In Skyward Sword, there is just so much more to interact with: holes to fly your beetle through, edges to crawl over, boxes to hide behind, etc. In Skyward Sword, when you go through an area again, it is not just "ugh, I have to get to X and walk through this boring landscape". The landscape is actually interesting and well thought out. If it wasn't, the twilight challenges would be a huge fucking pain in the ass. You can really tell what I mean by playing the "hardmode" of OoT and Skyward Sword. OoT's Master Quest changes the maps and makes the puzzles harder, Skyward Sword just makes everything hit harder. Why not make a Master Quest-esque hardmode? Because the maps are already hard enough as it is, the challenge comes from making the combat.
TL;DR: OoT maps are barren compared to Skyward Sword in every way.
Here is the most important observation I have made about Skyward Sword: the reason Skyward Sword is so fucking good, is because it takes 25 years of Zelda, every boss, every puzzle, every map, and says "Ok, now that we know all that... How can we make a game that has everything good from the last 25 years of Zelda without being a copypasta?" and then
fucking does it. Skyward Sword is my new favorite Zelda because it is 25 years of Zelda innovation, not just a new game where you save Zelda/world from *insert evil force here*.
