Can someone explain to me why people believe majora's mask is the best zelda game?

Most people don't see it as the best, but for those who do, it usually has something to do with the dark, heavy atmosphere and the fleshed out characters and game world.

For me it was the best because of the time limit, which while annoying and repetitive it gave me the chance to interact with the NPCs and since they had actual routines and lives that changed if you did they're side quests, you get to know them and that combined with the Moon staring down at you creates a real sense of urgency that's really hard to see in any game, also caused me a lot of frustration because I wanted to save everyone and help everyone but that's impossible because there are some quests that take all of the 3 days and every Dungeon takes at least 2, it's a feeling of dread that I've never felt in any game, having to save the world knowing that you couldn't help everybody was really shocking for me at the time, it forced me prioritize and save the world knowing that some of my favourite character's would have to die even I believe, also playing as a Zora and a Goron was pretty awesome.
So I guess it's my favourite Zelda game because it's the one that created the greatest impact on me during my childhood.
Also I would like to add that my second favourite Zelda game is Wind Waker and then Minish Cap, I never did care much for Ocarina even if it was the first 3D game I ever played I never saw anything special on it, never understood why people call it the best other than innovation for the time.

I preferred OoT over MM but some of my mates prefer MM. The time limit did annoy me on occasions during MM but it does look better (If I remember correctly you needed the upgrade part for the N64) and has good gaming ideas such as switching between the various species affected how they interacted with you.

I thought it had a better story, enviroments, and better designed dungeons and boss fights. OoT is good, but I loved Majora Mask far better.

I also liked the darker tone of the story.

Because it's actually different, for starters. Almost everything about it is different, except for the fact that you go to the same dungeons again.

You can tell Nintendo went their equivalent of an extra mile and decided to actually try being creative for once. I can really appreciate that.

You just can't find that in a Zelda game these days.

Also, the game was darker in general and had a very interesting premise. The masks were very interesting.

Can someone explain to me why people believe Mass Effect 2 is the best Mass Effect game?
Before people say it is personal taste and everyone has a right to an opinion, I'm curious to know why people hail it as the best Mass Effect ever. Why is it so special?

See what I did there?
Also, I like OoT more than Majora's, but Majora is better than OoT in some regards: characters, dungeons, side quests, greater story.
What I don't understand, is how people completely disregard TP and Wind Waker in the great Zelda debate.

Majora's Mask gave me much more fun per hour, the bosses were entertaining, the masks were great fun. The side quests were vastly more entertaining. You had time to manage, you had a much better open world and freedom to explore. I think the best thing was just getting the infinite magic milk and running around as a goron all day.

Also the game is much darker, and had a vastly more unique tone and theme.

For me Ocarina is but that's because personally I really hate time limits. I can fully accept that people might find it better if they didn't have that hang up but it just ruined the game for me. :(

I haven't played Skyward Sword yet though.

It was more ambitious then previous games and some later games for that matter. Plus the darker story and themed sections of the world really kept me interested. The actions you performed actually made you feel like you were effecting the world, especially the side quests. As far as the time limit gameplay element is concerned i was initially turned off by this. It wasn't until years later(and i mean years) that i truly appreciated it for how great it was. Now having said that i still think that windwaker and TP are the superior zelda titles(and im still hoping Skyward Sword blows me away).....but I would put majora's mask(or OoT, can never truly make up my mind) in third place most likely

It's not my most-favorite in the series. That would be Ocarina. However, Majora's Mask is the only game in the series I've played that legitimately creeped me the hell out. Skull Kid comes from that extra special area of the uncanny valley that makes him seem not just off, but completely terrifying. The game is honestly scary, especially towards the beginning. That and it was I believe the first Zelda to play with time travel, even if it worked really weirdly. Plus, being able to play as a Goron or a Zora is really cool (I don't care about playing as a Deku scrub, even if they're not inherently evil in this one for once), and since it's the direct sequel to Ocarina I'm sure NOT having to hear "Hey, listen!" every 8 seconds was enough of a breath of fresh air to permanently make it some people's favorite. I can totally understand why people would say it's their favorite Zelda game, and it probably would've been mine if I'd played it before I played Ocarina. Both games are incredible and roughly on par with each other, so I imagine it's really nostalgia factor of which one people played first.

Not only is Skyward Sword amazing at what it does, it does something that no game has ever been able to do before, ever; make OoT look bad. That sounds bad, and I'd be happy to explain it, but I cannot unless you have played Skyward Sword =|

Don't worry. I want to play it so bad and your explanation just made it harder to wait. So excited!

Because it is.

If you want to know WHY it's the best, it's because it's ocarina of time plus a million. Then again, i havent gotten to play skyward sword yet, so my opinion may change

Still, the sheer depth of the world and the memorable gameplay make it easily my favorite.

To wit, I can tell you, right now, how to 100% majora's mask. I've only beaten it 20 times. I have beaten ocarina well over 500 times, and can only tell you about half of the games. Majora's mask LOOKS better, PLAYS better, has more memorable environments, and no time for tedium.

It's great for its side quests and unique atmosphere and story (for the series). However, it has the worst dungeons and bosses in the 3D Zeldas. Seriously, two of the dungeons are my least favorite and second least favorite in the 3D games (Stone Tower and Great Bay, respectively). The other two main dungeons are just plain boring.

But like I said, the side quests are fantastic. And just toying around with the different major masks (and some non-major ones) is a treat. It's not my favorite game in the series (or even in the top 5), but I can see how people would love it (especially those who don't typically love Zelda games). I always say its a great game but a poor Zelda game because it is weak where the series is typically strong, and is strong where the series is typically weak.

Why is it so special you ask. Have you played the game? If you have then it should be pretty obvious. It's got characters who actually have a bit of depth and a story behind them, it's got a pretty decently large world in which things are actually happening and everything you do interconnects with the rest. The way quests work, the way you interact with the world, it's so different from many other zelda games, which imo makes it so much more memorable. Speaking as a person who have played almost every zelda game through to the end i must say that it is easily one of my favorites. Tied first spot actually.

Can you explain if I'm about halfway through?
Skyward Sword brought to my attention three things:
1. The combat in OoT is really rudimentary, very basic, and kind of sucks. You can basically flail your sword around on any enemy in the game, and it will eventually die. Yes there is some strategy involved with killing bosses and some enemies (like Skulltulas for example), but that is usually "whip out X item and the enemy is neutralized". In Skyward Sword, you can't really casually kill any enemy. Especially endgame when almost every single fucking enemy requires a thrust to kill. Trust me on this; get very good at thrusting, because you will fucking need it.
TL;DR: you can't flail your sword around in Skyward Sword, you have to know what you are doing.
2. There is next to no character development in OoT. I love OoT to death, but you don't really care about any of the characters, or get into their lives at all. Majora's Mask realized this and made it the entire point of the game. Skyward Sword is a happy balance between OoT's indifference towards characters, and Majora's Mask's obsession. You get into side quests to save random items and people, talk to people about their concerns, and you can actually engage in the random meatbags around you. I love the shop keeper in skytown because whenever I go to buy something and say "actually nvm..." he gets PISSED. That is such a nice little detail. And when you walk into the item check lady's house, she goes "uhh... why are you in my house? you shouldn't just do that, its kind of rude..."
TL;DR: Skyward Sword actually has people around you to care about, they are not just random pixels.
3. OoT doesn't use the landscape enough. I don't just mean Hyrule field or the climb up Death Mountain, I mean every piece of terrain you come across. In OoT, you can tell what is important, and what is not: explode that wall, climb that vine, walk here, don't go there, etc. In Skyward Sword, there is just so much more to interact with: holes to fly your beetle through, edges to crawl over, boxes to hide behind, etc. In Skyward Sword, when you go through an area again, it is not just "ugh, I have to get to X and walk through this boring landscape". The landscape is actually interesting and well thought out. If it wasn't, the twilight challenges would be a huge fucking pain in the ass. You can really tell what I mean by playing the "hardmode" of OoT and Skyward Sword. OoT's Master Quest changes the maps and makes the puzzles harder, Skyward Sword just makes everything hit harder. Why not make a Master Quest-esque hardmode? Because the maps are already hard enough as it is, the challenge comes from making the combat.
TL;DR: OoT maps are barren compared to Skyward Sword in every way.

Here is the most important observation I have made about Skyward Sword: the reason Skyward Sword is so fucking good, is because it takes 25 years of Zelda, every boss, every puzzle, every map, and says "Ok, now that we know all that... How can we make a game that has everything good from the last 25 years of Zelda without being a copypasta?" and then fucking does it. Skyward Sword is my new favorite Zelda because it is 25 years of Zelda innovation, not just a new game where you save Zelda/world from *insert evil force here*.
