I love it for it's clever dungeon designs, puzzles, and stellar boss fights.
Twilight Princess is my second favorite game ever (after Mass Effect 2)

Maybe I should just get different friends, but all of my friends love the Zelda series. Infact of those friends thinks the Zelda series is the best ever and refuses to admit any of the games were bad as a whole and makes excuses for the few mistakes that he's willing to admit.

I think I've played 3 Zelda games... Twilight Princess for the Wii, THe Phantom Hourglass for the DS, and I can't quiet remeber the one I played on a Gameboy.

I didn't find the games very fun. I did find them rather tidious, from running back and forth and back into and out of dungeons to long boss fights where you just stood just out of range and attempted to find a better solution to the battle than shooting it full of arrows or making the boss eat sword....

So, can someone tell me some of the points to why Zelda's great? Is it like the fact it was the first series to do _______? Or is there genuinly something fun about it?
well i would have to say i really like Link, he is quiet but he has something special about him that parts him from other heros, maybe its the green suit.next i would have to say i love the dungeons/temples, They can be challenging at times and sometimes they are really clever.IT also takes place in a nice enjoyable fantasy world that is usually bright and colorful. I find most zelda games to be very immersive. That is why i like zelda games.

Playing Twilight Princess on my Gamecube without any guides whatsoever was the best time of my life in any Zelda ever. Better than Ocarina actually

Hooray for Finding food for Yetis, singing as a Wolf, Doing ice puzzles, reuniting lost loves, killing dead dragons, becoming a human beyblade, having a hot imp on your back, destroying shadows to bring light and finally distracting Ganon with a fishing pole.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Ok, you don't like it, fair enough, but can you name one well made game that's similar to it in more than one aspect? Probably not (though someone on this forum probably will because there's likely to be one or two games nobody has ever heard of.)
Hang on, I love Zelda, but pretty much every decent adventure/puzzle/action game is extremely similar to Zelda game play.

Starfox on Gamecube
Any of the Mario RPG's
Banjo Kazooie/Banjo Tooie
What?
Ok, I'll admit the first one I've never played, assuming you're talking about the one with the dinosaurs and stuff, not the vehicle based 3rd person shooter
Paper mario was a turn based rpg with a few timing challenges almost along the vein of final fantasy
Banjo Kazooie was a like a super mario 64 type thing

Zelda was around me since its time on the NES, but I never really paid attention till Ocarina of Time saw the light of day and I played it when I was 8 years old. It's gameplay, graphics (for its time), story and characters made me explore this mysterious world of gaming which was just a once in awhile thing for me at that age. Here I am, 10 years later and the Zelda series is still my all time favorites from Nintendo, I loved Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, OoT, Four Swords Adventures, I still play these games after all these years, when my day was crap, I turn to my nostalgia to cheer me up. All the fun memories of my childhood come back to me in a single press of the A button on my good old N64 controller.

Basically, if you didn't grow up with Zelda or find the gameplay fun, you just aren't the type to enjoy it, plain and simple.

You should get new friends, I mean I always get rid of my friends whenever we differ on any opinion no matter how irrelevant!

Ah, it's so fun going around the land of Hyrule and slashing monsters as Link screams, "hyah".
The dungenons are fun to explore.

And the Phantom Hourglass was a bad game because of the damn temple. Going in it and out of it repeadetly... ugh.

My point is they all have very similar elements.

Save the girl
Collect items through use of puzzles, temples and bosses.
Explore World.
Gain powerups

LOL and yeah, I was talking about the starfox with the worlds and the dinosaurs.

EDIT: Sigh, I meant mario RPG's along the like of Galaxy, Galaxy 2 and 64, completely forgot about paper. My bad.
What Nintendo lacks in storytelling they make up for in Game play.

Besides, most of these games are continuations of NES/SNES games... and back then, story wasn't a big deal.

If you played Zelda and didn't find it fun, well Zelda's not for you. What you might find tedious isn't found tedious by other people. (though I really kind of disliked the DS titles, to the point that I reluctantly acknowledged them as part of the series).

Now, from the list you told me, it sounds like you've only barely scratched the surface of the good zelda games.

These are the core "classics" from the game series.

Ocarina of Time (N64) (1998)
Link to the Past (SNES) (1992)
Original Legend of Zelda (NES) (1986)

OT:personally the Zelda games are some of my favourite. I've collected a version of almost all of them, except for the 2 gamecube ones and the handhelds.

OP, I believe your problem is that you've played the later games, which I've found generally lose some of the charm of the N64 titles. Especially Phantom Hourglass. Fuck that game.

Zelda is like star wars (original series)
the parts that make it are flawed and simple
but the whole product is much greater than the sum of its parts.

For a main character that cant speak, you just get so emotionally invested in it.
he's always the underdog, hes always being pushed and pulled by forces he can't quite understand.

It's the emotional ties to Link (who's personality is purposely blank, and even his name refers to the 'link' between the character and the player) and his struggle are what makes Zelda...a legend (haha cheesy as hell, but i couldn't resist)

But again, at the end of the day, if your not feeling that connection, then its just not going to happen, if you want me to explain why others feel so strongly about it, well thats it.

You don't find the play style of Zelda fun. That is seriously all there is to it. No amount of explanation will make you think its a good series. Your taste differs from those that like the series. There. Problem solved.
This. Either you enjoy it or you don't. I don't like vanilla ice cream, even though it's either the most popular flavor or pretty close. I also don't like Gears of War. I don't think it sucks, I just don't like it.
