Can someone please explain dubstep to me?

Reviving a dead post just to say congrats to the person who linked that first Skrillex song. I didn't like it, but a couple days later and the damn thing is completely stuck in my brain.

I usually buy songs that earworm me badly, so... you probably just made your dubstep dude some money.

I've been listening to electronic music in general for a while, and I could never find anything sufficiently dark. Then I recently discovered Downlink while I was on mdma, and it was revelatory. The bass has a similar effect to the wall-of-sound that shoegaze does so well, but a bit more hard-hitting

I think drugs have a lot to do with it, is what I'm saying.

I don't really like it myself, to be honest. I listen mostly to British indie pop bands and so forth.
