What genres? There are indie games in every genre of game you can imagine.

Anyway, just throwing some games out there:
Torchlight (Torchlight 2 should be coming out soon)
Aquaria
Terraria
Magicka
World of Goo
Bob Came in Pieces
Braid
Super Meat Boy
Trine (Trine 2 is coming out before too long)
Spacechem
Mount & Blade Warband (The others are good, but Warband has the most community and modding support)
Attitude
Darwinia
DEFCON
Gratuitous Space Battles
Defense Grid: The Awakening
Revenge of the Titans

I hope that is enough of a list to get things started. Maybe I should lay off the indie games.

just looking at my steam list...

Sanctum - Really freakin awesome tower defense-meets-FPS hybrid. And it has online co op for up to 4 people, if that's your thing. I really like it. And they're still adding free content to the game.

Terraria - Pretty good minecraft look alike. There's more emphasis on monster slaying and reaching the end goal of the game, and waaaay less emphasis on building your own world. It's pretty fun. I prefer Minecraft, though. (I assume you're got minecraft)

Chantelise - made by the reccetear guys. Pretty fun action RPG, but not perfect.

Magicka - At least I think it's Indie. I have not played much due to time constraints, but it's pretty damn fun, especially with friends.

Cthulu saves the world and Breath of DeathVIII - Fun little parody RPGs. I've only played Breath of Death VIII so far, but it's pretty decent. And really freakin cheap.

That's all I got on my end.

Beat Hazard is probably my favorite indie game ever made. It's like Asteroids meets LSD to the sound of your own music. It's wonderful.

Let's see...Eufloria, Limbo, Amnesia, Magicka (Get friends! This game is no fun and really fucking difficult single-player), World of Goo, Terraria, SpaceChem (If you really want your brain to hurt), and of course, Beat Hazard. These are all games that I've played that I recommend. But, out of sheer curiosity, why do they have to be indie games (Besides, y'know, the excessive amounts of creativity put into them)?

Don't have much of an indie game collection, but VVVVVV held my interest for a good while. Simple, fun and an awesome soundtrack too.

Space Pirates and Zombies

I suggest starting with a small universe otherwise it can get rather grindy

Get Bastion and From Dust when they come out on steam, they both look great.

I can also reccomend Jolly Rover, great point and click adventure game,

Chime is a fairly decent puzzle game,

Everday Shooter is pretty good,

I've spent well over 100 hours playing the Mount and Blade games,

And World of Goo is awesome beyond belief.

More or less anything from Spiderweb, though I've not played Avadon, or the latter Geneforge or Avernum games.

Killing Floor, I think Tripwire counts as Indie. Plus, it's awesome. It does have some problems with some modems though.
