Can Story, Wit and Character Growth make up for mediocre graphics in an RPG?

I loved the old Monkey Islands, and still play RPGs from 20 years ago if I found the story and dialogue entertaining. What I'd like to know is am I part of the minority, or do others feel the same way.

Thoughts?

Uh... yeah? You've seen the critical acclaim Undertale [http://store.steampowered.com/app/391540/] got, right?

Yes. I'd say that applies to any game.

We are probably still the minority, but we shouldn't be. Graphics age. Good plot, dialogue and characters don't.

I don't really care much about graphics, I want a good story with well written characters. You do that, and I'll overlook most graphic issues you can toss my way.

This opinion isn't exclusive to RPG's though. This is my stance for pretty much every game out there.

Sure, so long as the graphics aren't actively repellent to look at.

Merely mediocre graphics, no worries.

I would guess the opposite view is in the minority (for RPGs at least, I think it would even out more for other genres but RPGs are relatively niche in the gaming world).

I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who would say Final Fantasy XIII is a better game than...well....basically any FF beforehand.

You guys don't just turn off the subtitles, press mute and admire the character models and set pieces for 20-40 hours? Weird.

That's the only reason that Dragon Age II was passable, after all. That entry happens to have many of my favorite characters from the whole series, despite the game itself having many, many flaws.

Make up? Story, wit and good characters is what makes a good RPG.

Good graphics are nice to have, but without any meat in it, RPG are just empty vapid Skinner boxes with some numbers floating around. If that wasn't the case, then Final Fantasy 13 would be one of the best JRPG of all times.

Graphics are a secondary consideration regardless of genre. In an RPG, story and characterization are gameplay.

I say that for even in more genres than RPGs (including but not restricted to Adventure games).

Absolutely. Many classic games are ugly by today's standards, but retain their appeal due to their compelling story story and characters. Graphics can age, but good storytelling doesn't.

Why is this even a question? Of course it does. People still play games like Planescape Torment, Daggerfall and even fucking Ultima, which is only like 2 steps above Pong in graphical terms for this very reason.

Reason I ask, is I've been working on a goofy type of RPG in my spare time. The only thing that will save it is the writing. I was just wondering if I've been wasting my time.

I'm curious to see what you guys think, if you've got the time/inclination.

I'm sorry but advertising is not allowed on the site.

I am going to go ahead and give you the benefit of the doubt here and let your thread stay open but I've gotta take the link out.

Ah, I do apologise, the game is made as a hobby and will never be monetised, so I thought it may be allowed. It won't happen again.

It's not graphics that makes the game, but the aesthetic to which the game uses them that counts. Thomas was Alone is literally a game about a rectangle that goes on an adventure, and it was awesome!

So absolutely a game's story, wit and characters can make it worth while :)
