Can we call games art when we're still obsessed with popularity/sales/market shares/attach rates?

I don't think I completely understand what your saying but art is something original and powerful to me, something life changing like many games, movies and music has done.

You're only proving what I'm saying: Mario is very well known by the mainstream. But no one considers the games he's in to be art as Fur Elise, Mulholland Drive, or Julius Caesar are all considered.

Ah, your very wrong there, in fact Mario is almost as well known as Beethoven because his original games were very original and changed the gaming world dramatically, just like Beethoven did for music.

Most people don?t treat art like art, not that it?s necessarily a bad thing.
People treat music, books, movies and a lot of photographs, comics, painting/drawing and graphics in the same way.
