Lately, it seems you can't go anywhere without critics telling you what they think about Snyder's attempt at producing the holy grail of comic book/graphic novel movies. I've always thought that critics were irrelevant, talentless hacks (those that get paid to share their opinions, that is). In this case, I think they are exceptionally bad, because I don't believe they are intended audience for the movie, so why do they have to promote their opinion like it is relevant? Odds are, 95% of them have never read the graphic novel, and they aren't embedded in the culture of comics, let alone appreciate them as an art form. I keep hearing how it is just an overly-expensive cult film for fanboys, or that we won't be able to stomach the changes, but whatever happened to letting us decide for ourselves? And haven't we earned the right to have one big-budgeted movie be targeted directly to us, with our satisfaction in mind? Think of the millions, nay - billions of dollars of revenue comic book fans have generated for Hollywood over the last decade, and all of the shitastic movies we've endured (X3, FF2, Spidey 3 & Superman Returns - more of a letdown than truly shitty). Haven't we earned the right to tell the general public to shut their yaps and follow our lead on this one but let us at least see the damn movie first?

But look at it this way. If you have to have read the novels first, to be able to get why the movie is so good. Then yeah, it is only a movie for fanboys.

Otherwise. Meh, why not. I mean they're making several Harry Potter movies. Why not. Besides, it's allready made, right?

"There are things that we did with Watchmen that could only work in a comic, and were indeed designed to show off things that other media can't"

The funny thing is that on rottentomatoes, it has a favorable rating overall, but in top critics? 30%. It was 0% a day ago. Critics just need to shut up about thus sort of thing.

You're making it sound like it's some travesty they're doing this. They're critics, it's what they do. They've done it since before you were born and they're gonna do it after you're too dead to hear 'em.

The way I see it, the graphic novel will still be untouched, regardless of the faithfulness of the film adaptation. I doubt that the changes will shake me up THAT badly if Snyder's still made a good movie. V For Vendetta was an entirely different animal than it's source material, but I still loved it.

EDIT: 'Kay...so...have my issues with the flick (mostly because it's too faithful to the source material, which kind of makes Lazy Lemon and Alan Moore right), but that's for another post. In response to the topic: Yes, I'm annoyed by critics who hate the movie, but say things like "comic-book fanboys are SURE to love it". No matter what the intentions of the critic were, the statement reeks of ignorance. To me, that kind of statement's akin to a critic saying they thought Madea Goes to Jail sucked, but that "black people are SURE to love it".

That kind of ignorance is all over the map, though. For example: Roger Ebert's a movie critic, but he's fully aware of how powerful a medium comics are. But read his review of My Name is Bruce. He say something similarly ignorant about gamers...

You know that you can still think for yourself, right? I'm not letting critics and reviewers taint my opinions of this movie. I didn't with Dark Knight, and I'm not about to start now. If it's good, great. If it's not, then I'll run crying back to the graphic novel and tell it over a box of tissues that I'm out $7 because Snyder butchered it.

The way I see it is thus: it can't be as bad as the latest Indiana Jones movie.

why should everyone make up their own minds? there's tons of examples that show ppl have no individual thought and they mostly think what the mob thinks, ie George Lucas and several others

it's not gonna happen anytime soon everyone is unique just like everyone else

It's not even out here.../sigh
Fanboy ranting? A vertiable maybe.

The way I see it, Watchmen will either be unbelievably awesome or bomb horribly. There really isn't much room in the middle in this undertaking.

Not much room in hating it either, this is possibly the most faithful creation of any comic based movie.

Lucky me got to see a pre-screening last night, and it's amazing, and I'm greatly surprised to see how incredibly well my favorite character, Rorschach, was portrayed, and acted.

The movie is so close, you could read along in the book as it progressed, word for word, scene for scene.

The ending was changed a bit, the alien thing was taken out (not saying how or what replaces it), but it's still as perfect as the book, in every way shape and form.

See, now i'd rather hear your opinion over some buffoon with an over-inflated sense of self-worth. as gamers or comic readers or anything else remotely geek-like, we have a community. and it would be like some jack-ass strolling into town and telling you how to run things without even trying to integrate themselves.
i have no idea what qualifies someone to be a movie reviewer other than someone with access to a computer and an opinion. are they just film students without enough talent to make it in the "biz"? who decides that this person's opinion is valuable enough to pay them (espeically in the shitty global economy).
if anything, when it comes to movies with a built-in critical fanbase, they should preface their reviews with : "I don't know anything about Watchmen but here is my review."

yeah, and it may suck for those that haven't read the graphic novel first, but think about a show like Lost, and someone starts watching the most current episode and has no idea what is going on - should they recap everything so they can include everyone?

I think it was Yahtzee who said "Nobody here likes it when I'm a nice guy so let me tell you what is good about this game so I can spend the rest of the time tearing it to shit."

People don't like when critics use sense. They like when critics call shit like "Titanic" great cinema.

Am I the only person who watched Moviebob's Oscar Show? He summed it up pretty well.

The people who judge these movies regard, above all else, the acting. Any movie that has to rely, even in the slightest, on special effects, locations, ect, is, for the most part, disregarded. Return Of The King only got best picture becuase they knew what they were expecting, and The Lord Of The Rings is arguably one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time. Heath Ledger was only even considered for an oscar because his performance was completely above and beyond what anyone could have expected.

...that sounds overly complex, let me simplify. You know how old people ***** about modern music? It's the same basic concept.

Apologies for the...oh, what's the point...

Ah, Titanic. The highest grossing film of all time. Seen by 2,000 13-year old girls who all insisted on sitting through it 300,000 times.
Yeah I hate to be a close minded asshole. But I couldn't understand why that movie was popular.

"They spent tons of money on it!" Is the response most people give me as if monetary investment == quality. Shit the best game I've played in a while was made by two dudes in a coffee shop...literally.

I hope you know what game I'm referring to...if not its called (hidden for people who want to guess ;D)...well it was going to be before my spoiler tag broke...fixed my fail.

Don't drink the Kool-aide. Just form an opinion of your own, and don't let yourself be drug around by the nose because of the opinion of others.

that's just my opinion.
