I've been wondering this for a while. I'm a unemployed student and haven't been able to fit gaming in the same budget as food. I own an old ps2 (is there any other kind) and a mac that can run small things through parallels. The closest to a new gen console is my mates xbox360 which we sort of co-buy games for. Am I a gamer?

I read escapist articles, understand the pain of drm and duke nukem forever, laugh at yahtzee's jokes about god of war rip-offs and wish immersion returned to rpgs. But I will probably never play a game like mass effect 2 or bayonetta, simply because they will be far forgotten by the time I get a console.

What do you think? Is interest alone enough to be a gamer?
Yes. You hold an active interrest in games and play them. You are a gamer.

I myself am boycotting the 360, don't have enough friends for a wii, or enough money for a PS3 so I don't have any "next gen" console.

I've even relaxed on the ammount of games I play this year as I just started uni and have many other thigns going on, but I still call myself a gamer - ie: I can still pick up a controller/mouse etc, and kick most peoples butts in a game. The anomaly here is sports games which I don't play, and strategy gaems which I incredibly suck at.

The fact that you have purchased a console and played a game, enjoyed it, and pursued it had made you a gamer.

The only way I could see NOT calling you a gamer is if you sat around playing online card games or flash games. I'm talking uber-casual here. Things that housewives would commonly be seen playing. You can still enjoy all those and still be a gamer, but if you limited yourself to those because of a lack of understanding or desire to play anything else, then you might not meet the exceedingly low bar that has been set to be called a gamer. I think simply owning a PS2 qualifies you several steps above that bar. You'd be hard pressed to find an uber-casual housewife that owns a PS2 for herself.

I'd say you're a gamer. It doesn't matter if you don't have the latest systems; all that matters is that you enjoy games.

Mac? Not really, it's not like you have many games... or use Mac to play on them instead of dual booting.

PS2? Of course. One of my favorite jRPGs, Persona 3, is on the PS2.

You could split the difference and say that you're a retro gamer, which is effectively true.

I bet my advice will be redundant (either already noted above, or you already do so), but I'd recommend getting some of the classic PS1/PS2 games since you have the opportunity to really appreciate them.

As with the title question, yes you can. I have a mac (tho I did install Linux on it a bit ago) and a PS2, and I love it to death (the PS2 I mean)

But interest? Yeahh I think so. I'm still buying PS2 games nowdays that I wanted to buy years ago, but couldn't for some reason or another

I was just about too start a topic very much like this(as in this +DS). I'm not sure about the definition simply being "Playing games" thoo. I mean, I went too the movies last week, but that doesn't make me a filmbuff. I think gaming needs too be a pretty major interest too make you a gamer. Why yes, I am a snob.

As gamer is doesn't matter what you have and don't have all that matters is that you take the gaming to heart and passion.
Take myself for an example, I was in the exact same spot as you for the longest time Only had a PS2, had a crappy computer that couldn't run a game to save it's life. I have recently got an X-Box 360, so keep your stick on the ice. Your a gamer don't worry about it.

If you play games, you are a gamer.

Also, congrats for not getting swept up in the next-gen bullshit like the rest of us. We're kinda stupid and we'll buy anything.

Yeah of course, playing games makes you a gamer. But of course you might want to get something else so you can get newer games but thats just a personal choice, either way you are a gamer even if you only play casual*shudder* games

Why wouldn't you be and why would you care? It's just some label someone made up at some point...

Oh and buy Persona 4, RPG wise the new generation doesn't offer anything that much better, if at all.

You seem to care about the genre, follow developments in the industry and news about new games. So yes, that's all you need in my book to be considered a gamer; a certain passion or care about the videogame medium. And you seem to have that.

Well, seeing as Steam has now been made entirely compatible [http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=3578&p=1] with Macs, I think you're in if you buy yourself a copy of HL2, just to be sure.

It's not really about what I care about. The whole idea of labelling people based on something with a hugey diverse fan base seems a bit silly. But there are plenty or articles/forum threads/discussions about what defines a gamer. I was wondering if active involvement in the gaming arena was the most important part of it.
Seems to be a resounding no :p

Oh, and bought it, played it, wish it had slightly fewer days towards the end...
