I was just about too start a topic very much like this(as in this +DS). I'm not sure about the definition simply being "Playing games" thoo. I mean, I went too the movies last week, but that doesn't make me a filmbuff. I think gaming needs too be a pretty major interest too make you a gamer. Why yes, I am a snob.
I wouldn't call it snobbery so much as a fair point. Going to the movies doesn't make you a film buff. Staying up to date on the films developments, how the directors interpreting the idea, keeping tabs on the actors involved and generally researching everything to do with the film might though. This is what a lot of people do with games and game development.

You're a gamer if you play goddamn pong regularly, as long as you're interested in games, it doesn't matter what you do.

You can be a buff of certain genres of films though. You could be a buff of 1940s film noir, or horror, or car movies, or romance or even anime.

In the same way, you can also be a buff of PS2 games. There's plenty of 'em out there, and they're cheap! There's never been a better time to buy PS2 games.

I've been wondering this for a while. I'm a unemployed student and haven't been able to fit gaming in the same budget as food. I own an old ps2 (is there any other kind) and a mac that can run small things through parallels. The closest to a new gen console is my mates xbox360 which we sort of co-buy games for. Am I a gamer?

I read escapist articles, understand the pain of drm and duke nukem forever, laugh at yahtzee's jokes about god of war rip-offs and wish immersion returned to rpgs. But I will probably never play a game like mass effect 2 or bayonetta, simply because they will be far forgotten by the time I get a console.

What do you think? Is interest alone enough to be a gamer?
Why wouldn't you be a gamer? You play games. As for ME2 going out of style, I highly doubt that trend will be dropped anytime soon. Hell, the way I see it, you're a smart gamer. By the time you get your own system, the prices will have dropped substantially, and you wont have to guess on what to buy.

edit: Aren't they still making games for the ps2 as well? For not being a "next gen" console, sony still caters to its fans, even if they don't own the $600 up to date system.

PS2 downstairs on top of the Wii which is on top of the 360, and I have an SNES emulator on my Macbook with 360 controller compatibility. I say I'm raring to go.

Also I saw P4 mentioned and I just want to say that game is fucking marvelous and makes P3 look inadequate by comparison.

Gamers are people who play and enjoy games.
You play and enjoy games.
Therefore you are a gamer.

Still, for the record, the reason I claimed snob is because of how often this criteria is used by elitists. "What? You only play games twelve hours a week, and don't know who produced the music for *insert game noone has ever heard about here*? Totally a jock!"

Oops. Topic is dead. Never mind then.
