Using the Enigma code, I want you to try and break my concealed message. This will test you quite a bit, as I will allow no cheating and using a program! However, I will allow you to look up the code, otherwise this would be impossible.

We will suppose that the basic Enigma has been loaded with the rotors I, II, III. Thus the right-hand rotor R is III. We will assume also that each rotor is in its A position when the encipherment is performed. In the real Enigma, the R rotor would switch from AAA to a different code, changing every letter, however, I will use a basic enigma code presuming that each motor is at AAA. After you have cracked this, I will move on to more complex codes. DO NOT POST THE ANSWER : Please, keep it to yourself if you wish, or PM me and I'll tell you if you were right. Later, I will post up a harder code.

I'm sorry, I don't even know the most basic thing about cryptography. Could you explain what a router is? Also I'll assume that if "Thus the right-hand rotor R is III" then the left hand router (Whatever that is) is I and the middle router (Assuming there is one) is II.

Could you also explain what all that stuff about "A position" is and what all that AAA stuff means?

Just look up stuff on the enigma code machine,
The what?

Sure. In the Enigma, the most basic one, there were three rotors. R (right) L (left) and M (middle).

You would type a letter, and R, M then L would each encode it according to a different alphabet. So yeah - R is III, M is II and L is I.

Each of these had numerous different substitutions for each letter. Say, setting AAA would turn a G into a C, then AAB would turn it into something completely different. Starting with R, at AAA, after each letter, the code would change to a different one (either AAB or AAZ depending on code). A position is just that - the first position.

I am using AAA all the way through the code, making deciphering it as easy as working backwards through the encryption process, letter by letter.

Ah-HA! Your feeble AAA III, II, I code proved no match for the Astounding Birras!

You were correct, but it doesn't really count. You knew what the encoded phrase was.
