So the thing is, I like the unlockables and class system and leveling of Call of Duty, but...well, not so much the gameplay. I play mostly on PC but also on PS3 and 360, what should I get to quell my thirst for some good online shootin'?

Oh, online... well... I was going to suggest Metro 2033, but it's not online. Battlefield: Bad Company 2?

Killzone 3 is pretty cool, so long as you're more into objective gameplay than just straight up team death match.

Comand and Conquer: Renegade

It has unlockable things in its multiplayer matches as the game goes on, and is objective based rather than kill based, giving it a very different gameplay.

Heh, I was going to suggest that too. I absolutely love that game.

But yeah, BF:BC2's very fun as well. I recommend that.

Counter-Strike (source or 1.6)
Day of Defeat (source or 1.3)
NOT Team Fortress 2 (fuck that game)
Borderlands (for a more SP-esque MP game)
Battlefield Bad Company 2 (like MW but 100000x better in every like)
Brink

Serious Sam is a more old school style shooter with the fluid feel of CoD.

TF2 is highly active, fun, and addictive. Get the Orange Box if you have an extra 10 bucks. You get Half-Life 2, episode 1 and 2, and Portal along with TF2. All of them are solid games.

The Battlefield series is fun. BC is more console like than the rest of the series on PC. It's not yet clear just how much BF3 will be following it. Purists play either BF2 or 1942. These players are brutal compared to BC2, but that's normal in most FPS series. Playing CoD is a lot tougher than CoD4 or Black Ops. Learn to spot enemies.

Red Orchestra goes more for realism. It's fun, but not so active as BF or TF2 or the recent CoD games.

L4D and L4D2 are good for co-op if you like that. Although it has a high number of asshats with no patience for new people playing. And it's pretty much made for griefing. Other co-op games are Borderlands and Killing Floor. These games aren't so fun if you're not into co-op.

If you're broke, there's America's Army. It's free, but it has a pretty steep learning curve and it's not really as fun as the others I've listed.

Out of the list, BC2, TF2, and America's Army all have some sort of unlocks. BC2 is the only one with leveling up. TF2 has guns and hats to collect, and America's Army has offline training which opens up new maps and classes to use. America's Army has a stealth section from hell required to unlock playing as special forces.

crysis 2 has a pretty solid online, I've got it for xbox 360, the servers aren't that active...at least I don't think they are. Probably more active on PC.

I personally reguard Team Fortress 2 as the best online FPS of all time. the community is amazing, the classes are all EXTERMELY well balanced, there's an emphasis on teamwork (but you can still go do you own thing and still be a help to your team), it's just a flat-out FANTASTIC game.
I honestly cannot praise it enough, anyone who dislikes TF2 just doesn't like good games. I'm sorry, I know these things are usually opinions, but in this case, saying TF2 suck is like saying the sky is green with purple polka-dots; there's no argument, you are WRONG.
if you don't have it, BUY it. it's only $10 on Steam and all the DLC/updates/community-made stuff is FREE*.

*there are OPTIONAL charges (ie. the Mann Co. Store), but pretty much everything in the store can be found through trading or normal play (both free).

I would wait untill BF3 and if you are really eager to play, just get a past BF game, BC2 is awesome (we are talking battlefield here, don't confuse with anything else)

Shit, I remember that game, that was fun. Thing is, I didn't think anyone else did.

Pick the cheapest one with the best score. Most of them are extremely similar so personal preference will be your only guide.

Thanks for all the responses - I loved BC2, bought it day one and played it up until recently. I just have everything unlocked though, so it's not quite what I want. Killzone 3 does look pretty cool - is it as sluggish with the controls as the first one?

Bad company is is really your only other option for weapon unlocks, reach for player customization.

Personally, I'd pick reach, but try both out. Both should have demos on the XBL marketplace.
