Baccano! is a good recommendation i can give you, it's a western styled Anime that's got a mafia theme going and is quite an excellent piece of work. Brutal in violence like Black Lagoon but bloody great fun.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. It was meant to be realistic, and it sure shows. It is also quite good.
it certainly captured the realism of the scenario, but i thought the main character was a whiny little ***** -_-

What are you talking about? Black Lagoon had awkward love triangle. Revy, Rock and Dutch. Watch it again, youll see.
Nope, Dutch is more like father figure to her.

It's more like a tense relationship between her and Rock, she's too independent to really admit her liking to Rock, but really, with a girl like Revy, you won't get any lovey dovey situation, before you know it, she one day will jump into Rock bone and shagging with him like there's no tomorrow.

I was actually thinking more Dutch and Rock but...you know what, we'll go with what you said. I was being silly. The only woman for Dutch is his Torpedo Boat

Try Kino's Journey its a interesting little story about a traveler just exploring the world, with her talking motorcycle, but it sort of seems to talk with a speaker on the bike somewhere, otherwise it looks like a regular motorcycle.

Well, living in roanapura, or we call it City of Sin (what an understatement) Dutch can always get girls if he want to, as long he doesn't flirt with the wrong one (coughcoughShenhuacoughcough*get throat slitted*)

Hourou Musuko is an anime series about three youngsters who struggle with their gender identity in modern-day Japan. I think its visual style is gorgeous -- it looks like a watercolour painting, almost. Also, it's a drama, not a comedy, and it takes it subject matter seriously.

Personally I wouldnt trust a woman in Roanapura with my penis. Either theyll cut it off, or ill get an STD. Dutch is pretty streetwise, but he might still run into this sort of thing.

That could be an OVA. "Dutch gets Herpes". It could be used as a social commentry highlighting the soaring cost of medication in low income areas. Man I should write this stuff down.

Well, Dutch is a simplistic person, he can always visit Shenhua and asking for quick "circumcision", there, problem solved, and ouch.

The most realistic anime I can think of is NANA. Clannad is really good too until it gets all weird and stuff but I highly recommend NANA.

Gunslinger Girl is a bit like Black Lagoon, except with little girls, but they handle it realistically. It's not as action packed, but it's still a good watch.
Just avoid the second season, though.

Unless the problem is "I have no money and a burning desire to get rid of my penis and 50 pints of blood", I dont think thats going to be of any use to anyone.

Except Shenhua. She would enjoy it

Naoki Urasawa's "Monster"

brilliant anime set in the late 80's early 90's.
it follows the story of a japanese brain surgen called tenma who saves the life of a ten year old boy instead if treating a celebrity because the boy came in first.
unfortunatley for tenma, the boy is a complete monster who murders the hospital director and runs away, ten years later he returns for his twin sister and tenma intervines.
caught up in the thick of it, temna is frammed for most of the boys crimes and is on the run to catch the mysterious killer and put an end to his string of serial murders.there is alot more to be discovered as information on the boys past reveal startiling facts about germany under the old regime.

sorry for the paragraph but its really goood, near the end it gets a little thin but thats because it ties up the loose ends before finishing up. :p

Monster could be the anime you're looking for. Extremely down to earth, with realistic and intelligent characters, drama, pacing. Hell, it's more grounded than most Hollywood action films.

If you don't like the highly stylized and often spastic feel of most animes and want something sophisticated, then try watching Monster. It's not some unheard of niche anime either, the animation and English dub are very high quality and many rank it among their favorites.

You may also recognize the main character's voice actor if you've played any videogames ever :p
You stole my suggestion. However, I thought Monster went downhill after the excellent setup had been delivered. By which I mean, once it's opened up the main plot almost never gets a mention and the show become a serial. It's long as well. Too long to be able to skip forward to something more interesting and not be totally lost to what's going on.

That was my main problem with it but it was good enough to stick around and watch. Deathnote kinda reminds me of this too.
