You shouldnt pass up Ghost in the Shell so easily. Dont watch the film watch the series for starters. And give it a good half dozen episodes before you throw it away because of the cyber punk, and give it a dozen before you throw it away because of disinterest. The Laughing man story is seriously one of the most interseting intelectual narratives I have ever expereinced.

But from what you were saying, staying away from the main pitfalls of anime (cute cuddly sidekicks and kids saving the world).

Cowboy Bebop (has a pet dog but its really quite cool) - Pretty much Bounty hunters in space, sadly a reasonably short series, what is there is great, soundtrack is phenomonal and the characters are enjoyable.

Beserk - This is a set in a darkages european like world, and follows the adventures of a man named Gutts from birth. It is a fantasy land although there is little magic in the series, This is probably have to be the most epic story in all of anime if not most epic story ever told, the series will leave you wondering and you will have to read the manga to find out what happens next, but it is certainly a good watch.

You should note that Marval have begun making their superheroes into anime, Iron Man has been done and Wolverine is being released atm. they are interesting takes, if funny looking takes on Logan and Tony Stark.

Psychological animes.
These are what i think are the more mature of the animes out there, focusing around battle of wits more than whose sword is the bigger or whose magic is stronger.

Death note - Think Dexter but where killing bad people is 100x more easy so he kills 100x more people... thats probably pretty bad analogy. The art is amazing, and the mind games that are played are enjoyable.

One Outs - You dont like baseball? well you do now! watch the first episode and try not to watch anymore.

Akagi - An anime set around gambling, specificaly mahjong.

Kaiji - another anime set around gambling, this time many different types of gambling, such as scisors paper rock... sounds boring, but you would be surprised, the insight into the games nad the ways people can play is rather interesting.

I recent tried to start watching Hellsing, but my living in Britain got in the way of immersion:

Why is every policeman armed to the teeth? The only time I've seen an armed policeman was at an airport
Why are the police driving American police cars?
Why is the main character dressed like he's from the 19th Century?
Why is his boss dressed like she's from the 18th Century?
Why does the 70's punk in the second episode have to be both a stereotype and the one character with a realistic dialect?
Is the head of the police unit the same guy who reads the quotes and intros in Civ V?
Why is everyone wearing gaudy crucifixes?
Why is Britain for some reason depicted as being a Catholic country rather than a secular CoE one?
Why have the American cast members been taking English lessons from the girl from Frasier?
Why is all crime in Britain depicted as gun crime rather than the much more prevalent knife crime?
Why is a 16 year old part of the firearms squad?
Why are the police depicted as using Uzi's and Desert Eagles rather than MP5's and small handguns?
Why is a 16 year old girl who can barely pull a trigger never mind shoot straight being handed an anti-material rifle and given no training?
Why has Megavideo told me my 72 minute limit is reached after 2 episodes?

I used to watch some DBZ as a young kid, but for the most part I've never liked anime. However, a friend started getting me into Black Lagoon, which I think is pretty awesome so far. My issue with anime has never been the art style, but rather the typical conventions of the genre which I despise, like cute animal sidekicks, awkward love triangles, ridiculous villains, high school drama, etc. Obviously I'm painting with broad strokes, but I'm not willing to wade through rivers of muck to find what I'm looking for.

From the episodes I've seen so far, Black Lagoon has avoided most of what I don't like because it was set in the real world with an emphasis on military hardware and interesting and believable characters, instead of a bunch of children saving the world.

Are there similar shows like this? I did a brief Google search and the only ones I could find that kid of fit this mold were Golgo 13 and (maybe) Ghost in the Shell, although I'm not really sure I want to get into Ghost because that may be too much cyberpunk for my tastes.
I wonder, regarding believability and Black Lagoon- has Roberta shown up yet? This will show you that anime will pretty much always do what anime does best.

You ask a tough question. I watch a lot of anime and it really might not be your medium. I can think of many dramas that have a more modest quota of the things you don't like (wandering son 'Horo Musuko', Spice and Wolf, NANA, Baccano, Durara (all as mentioned), Koi Kaze) , but it seems that you want some more action. Remember, I don't like some of the stuff you mention as well; but sometimes an anime will do it in a way that makes you think wow.

Come to think of it try Bakemonogatari.

Having watched all of Black Lagoon to date, I can't think off the top of my head of any contemporary action shows that are similar. Darker than Black gets a good write up at ANN but I've not watched it. Highschool of the Dead has the greatest fanservice ever and is one season of fun.

There are some fantasy action shows like Moribito- guardian of the spirit and Claymore you might like. Most importantly, Berserk. However watching this anime slice of the universe made me absolutley have to read the manga.

But at the cost of getting flamed and being without imagination, if you can actually get into them (watch in large chunks), avoid the filler episodes, and give them a chance, then Naruto and Naruto Shippuden, Bleach and One Piece have merits that just can't be matched on shorter running series. Sure they have stuff you won't like but the payoff is immense.

Other than that, you might want to go hunting out the anime movies.

Berserk - Because it's awesome even if it's not as awesome as the manga!
Cowboy Bebop - Sci-fi meets Bounty Hunters with some Jazz & Blues thrown in for added goodness.
Samurai X OVA's
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad - Excellent storyline and brilliant soundtrack.

Casual Shinji

I don't really know why you would want to watch realistic anime, since it's boring as hell.

Case in point: Beck.

Indeed Samurai X is very good. Especially the OVA Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal.

Also Samurai Champloo is awesome and quite realistic.

Ahem, well, if you really want a realistic anime then Jin-Roh might be a suitable pick. Problem is that
1) it's film (so no episode brain-draining, biorhythm-destroying marathons with this one),
2) whether you like it or not will depend on what kind of movies you like in general.
3) It follows from an alternate historical development: the Nazi's "won" WW2, it plays in Japan around the 60's (?), but there are no palpable references to the fact, which kinda bugged me. They made no use of the peculiar events that would follow they continuation of the third Reich (not a frigging Nazi-fan, but I'd be intrigued)... Except for the fact that the characters use German-made gear and weapons (and cars)... Oh yeah so the problem is an unrealistic historical background...(?)

It's Mamoru Oshii, so it has respectable innate credentials, mind you. Both the artwork and the script are high quality (decent to some, superb to others)...

I don't know, you could try it. Here's a link:

Arakawa Under the Bridge

So here a short summary: Kou Ichinomiya, fell into Arakawa river and rescued by a girl, his family taught him never indebted to someone, so he ask her what can he do to repaying her for saving his life, she tell him to love her, and that's when he start living under the bridge.

Here the opening song in full:

I agree that Arakawa Under The Bridge is fantastic, but I don't know that it's massively realistic...It's a bit like Alice in Wonderland in that Kou, a regular character, is surrounded by completely insane characters and comments on it.
My suggestion: Naruto!
jokes.
Samurai Champloo is good, Toradora has a tolerable mix of teenage wuv and comedy. Death Note is fantastic, but supernatural...
wait, are there any realistic animes out there?!

Baccano! is a good recommendation i can give you, it's a western styled Anime that's got a mafia theme going and is quite an excellent piece of work. Brutal in violence like Black Lagoon but bloody great fun.
I see more and more I'm being beaten to the punch in recommending this.

This is a good thing. Baccano is fucking awesome.

Ooh, Ghost in the Shell! An advice to you my friend; watch the original movie first, because as far as I know, it is by far the best one of them.

Other than that, there's always Elfen Lied. Not that realistic, granted (virus making humans give birth to telekinetic mutants isn't something that appears very often IRL), but still very mature and dark. Watch the first two or three episodes and see what you think.

That is actually the one I meant, Trust & Betrayal. I just couldn't remember the tagline, and was too lazy to look it up.

Been mentioned a few times now, but definately watch Cowboy Bebop, its basicly Black Lagoon in Space.

Ghost in the Shell, again very good series with absolutely no silliness at all.

I'd say give Avatar:The Last airbender, a go (I real its not real anime), it has some silly moments, but on the whole has a pretty good story delt with in a mature manner.

Ergo Proxy is good, but very very brain intensive, if you don't want to think too much, AVOID, otherwise it sets a nice dark future tone.

Assuming you want only realistic character development and not realistic plots, I would recommend the old standards Elfen Lied, Death Note, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (although be careful about that last one).

Check out Blue Heaven, a bloody fantastic manga. Imagine the movie Titanic with no love triangle and a bunch of dangerous people on board trying to kill each other.

Let's see... By realistic, you must mean "I can see this somehow happening in real life someday." as opposed to it being basically impossible. Fair enough. Alot of the suggestions made here are reasonable, especially if it has to do with technology.

I'm actually going to suggest a pair of shows I haven't actually seen: Planettes and the Patlabor series. Both are using technology taken to a logical conclusion, even though one of 'em is a mecha-show. Also, if you haven't seen it, watch Appleseed. It's too good to be missed.

If you can forgive a few unrealistic things for comedical pourposes, Great Teacher Onizuka's pretty realistic.

It's just about a retired-punk who wants to make something of his life and become the best teacher, but as you can imagine, his personality and over the top actions make it hard for him to accomplish that goal.

A part of the story is he's hired when the head principal notices him giving a speach to the vice principal that you can't judge students or treat them like trash. He gets hired. He lives on the rooftop in a small room. xD

He's assigned to take care of a class of students who have traumatised many a previous teacher befor him. The ending's a bit... well, I'm not a big fan of the ending because Onizuka has to leave the school, but it's still a good show.

Urumi Kanzaki was my favourite character next to Onizuka.
