Will go ahead and second the recommendations for Sandman and Empowered.

Will also recommend:

Hack/Slash (vigilantes hunting slashers)
Dead@17 (a weird semi-religious comic book)
The Waking (a fairly original take on zombies)
Morning Glories (elite prep school -> conspiracies -> murders)
Aphrodite IX (an interesting dystopian book about an assassin)

Currently my to be read list is:
Scarlet
Unwritten
Daytripper

All of which looked pretty spiffy.

I have to recommend 100 Bullets, absolutely fantastic. Also, although its still going, the Walking Dead is another great one.
I really enjoyed The Walking Dead but I lost any and all interest at a certain point; you can probably guess which part if you've read them. After that I lost all interest and haven't been back since.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman fits neither requirements but I'll suggest it anyway, that and Lucifer which is a spin off. Excluding that a History Of Violence.
Damn right, Sandman is awesome and the spin offs are amazing, especially any of them that involve Death of the Endless. I honestly thought that I had no interest in comics until I read this. Also check out Neil Gaimans novels if you are looking for something good to read, american gods, neverwhere, stardust and anansi boys, they're golden nuggets in a sea of shite/dan brown books.

P.s I have always been slightly unsettled by how attractive Death is, she is the grim reaper... but... I definetly would. Ahem, (cough)... any man who says otherwise is full of it.
Don't worry I share the same view but Delirium has her moments http://tjscomics.com/publishers/dccvertigo/delirium_terrymoore_520pixh_96ppi.jpg
And sorry but I have to state this out of gratitude to those who gifted me with them I was given all 4 volumes of Absolute Sandman X D
I just realized no one is coming out of the woodwork to show their love for despair... She is ugly as sin but THIS IS THE INTERNET and I imagine someone somewhere would. yuck, made myself sick with that joke. I apologize to everyone on this forum, also I forgot to recommend "preacher", its fantastic and I don't think its been mentioned yet.

I don't really read comics anymore and it doesn't really fit your criteria, but NYX is a pretty good X-men run that basically involves none of the mountainous continuity usually associated with them as the characters were mostly all created for that story and are not really seen again outside of it.

It's mostly known as the introduction of X-23 into comics, but she's actually more of a side character in the story. I found myself falling in love with the rest of the cast.

This could have been a cool thread. Instead people used it for a pissing competition. Good job.

I won't go too much into detail, so I'll just be doing a bit of namedropping with short descriptions.

What all these titles have in common is that they are very, very good, and can be gotten in trade paper backs. Some are series, and some(with series in brackets) are single, self contained publications.

Sandman - Neil Gaiman's story about Morpheus, the personification of Dreaming, and his struggle to be human. A lot of symbolism, fables, and, well, fairy tale stuff. Collected in about 12 TPB's.

Hellblazer - The story of John Constantine, and conman and liar, who just so happen to also be heavily into magic and demons. Very dark, and though it deals with the fantastical and occult, very down to earth. Collected in many TPB's.

The Long Halloween (Batman) - Batmans hunt for the Holiday Killer. Much more of a detective story than bats usuall get up to, which is great considering that Batman is just that: A detective. Actually, bats isn't even that much in this one. Has a great ending, that will have you wondering what excactly happened. Released in a single TPB.

The Killing Joke (Batman) - A must read Batman story. The Joker goes extra brutal in this one, kidnapping Gordon and planning to drive him insane. Some interesting characterizations are brought forth. Released in a single TPB.

Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? (Batman) - I have heard that some people don't like this one, but I absolutely loved it for being a Batman centered story that wasn't about Batman at all, but about how we view ourself, our existence, and what we do. And how others view it. It's also sort of an homage to Batman through the decades. Collected in a single TPB

Marvel 1602 - A look at how the Marvel universe could be, if it was set in the year of 1602. All the familiar characters are there, changed to fit the time. Cool if you're a fan of the marvel universe... maybe not so much if you aren't. Collected in two TPB's, IIRC.

The Walking Dead - A comic about a zombie apocalypse. A REALISTIC comic about a zombie apocalypse. Among my favourite series, it follows a group of survivors in a world that has died, and rised again to eat them. Very brutal, very real. And I'm not talking about the zombies, 'cause neither is the comic. The Walkind Dead refers to the survivors. It's a realistic look at a world that has collapsed, and what that does to the people still in it.

I would write more, but sadly my laptop is running out of power. If the thread is still active tomorrow, I might write a few more recomendations.

OOOH! Another idea DMZ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMZ_(comics), It's about a second American civil war with New York becoming a demilitarized zone and follows a reporters time in New York. It's not complete but I hear it's winding down.
