Can you recommend some slice of life anime? Ones of the cute variety?

Hm...I generally stick to light-hearted, good-feeling stuff too, but you've already mentioned some titles I would have suggested. So. I guess, have some tentative possibilities?

New Game
Kiniro Mosaic
Hinako Note
Tamako Market
Love Lab
A Channel
K-On, if you somehow haven't seen it.

And...maybe Acchi Kocchi?

...I did miss the "conclusive" bit of the criteria, come to think of it. But hell, they're slice of life type shows. Overarching narrative isn't exactly a focal point. And...well, a bit of conflict or drama is to be expected. It's usually resolved with hugs and kisses though, so eh.

I already explained what I meant by "conclusive ending" somewhere in the thread. I'll paste it over for you here, so you don't have to look for it:

I'm very much aware of that and I don't mind an open ending, when it comes to story-less slice of life anime, but at the same time I'd like that ending to be constructed in such a way, that the series feels standalone. I want the last episode to feel different and special, when compared to the rest, to make you feel sort of nostalgic about what you've just watched and send off a positive message of "It's been a wonderful journey, I'm sure, but now you must part ways and the characters' life moves on. However, if you're still not satisfied and got attached to those characters, there's a whole manga series for you to read, but it's also fine if you didn't and what you watched was enough for you.", instead of ending abruptly, without any sort of conclusion, and sending off a negative message of "Stop! That's all you're getting. What? You want more? Fuck you! Go buy the manga!"
I guess I can bite the bullet and go for some school shows as long as the ending is realized in that kind of way. Do any of the shows you suggested have that?

He's being absurdly picky, but I kind of get it. I get into similar moods with books sometimes. Like, I'll want a near future sci-fi, with a female protagonist, in audiobook format, and it has to have a good narrator and be more than 20 hours long. And then surprise surprise, there's nothing. And someone recommends "Dresden Files" even though it covers none of my criteria.
Again, I'm not being absurdly picky. You might not have noticed, but I've been accepting recommendations that don't cover my criteria all the time in this thread just because they seemed fun regardless of that. The only hard "no" so far has been the school setting, but even that I'm slowly starting to get more and more lenient on.

ok, i was going to abandon this cause i only had the one idea, but it turns out i've got one more little gem that you might not have tried called tonari no seki-kun.

- focuses on cute girl antics rather than comedy (I don't find Japanese humor funny, personally)
- literally the whole show is narrated by a 'cute' girl.

- has very cheerful, relaxing atmosphere
- the story is about... i mean... there's no actual tension.. that counts as relaxing, right?

- doesn't have conflict, action, or drama of any sorts
- it doesn't -actually- have any of these things, but our heroine does have an active imagination...

- doesn't focus on school life
- ok, the entire show is in school, but it's not focused on school life, at all. honestly.

- if it's set in modern Japan, it doesn't take place in overly urban areas (Tokyo etc.)
- i have no idea where it takes place. doesn't matter though. you could say the bulk of it takes place inside the girl's mind.

- [OPTIONAL] isn't overly mundane, i.e. has some light fantasy/sci-fi/supernatural elements to make everything a little bit more interesting
- it is mundane, but in the supernaturalist way possible?

honestly, it probably doesn't fit the exact mold you're looking for, but it could if you reeaally stretched those definitions. i just have to recommend it somehow. it's definitely one of my favorites i would recommend to anyone for any reason.

Ah, I remember that one! I got it recommended, like, half a year ago when I was asking around for anime comedies with more creative types of humor. True, it doesn't fit what I'm looking for in the context of this thread, but it might be a fun watch regardless. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

Mm...Mosaic has a second season which I haven't gotten around to watching yet, but I remember it being a relatively fulfilling conclusion.

New Game too. And that just started a second season.

Love Lab ended on a nice note too, but it was a sweet show overall.

Hm...I dunno, dood. Having trouble thinking of anime in general that doesn't have a "read the manga" ending to it.

Okay, thanks for the feedback. Looks like in this case I'm just gonna have to find out for myself.

Now, this is targeted more to the general public. I'm watching Kobayashi-san's Dragon Maid right now, and despite the overly perverted humor, oh so typical for the Japanese, and all the yuri-baiting, it's a really sweet, comfy, feel-good show, so thanks for recommending it. My point in mentioning it, however, is that now that I'm watching it, I'm beginning to reconsider my "no action" criterion because it turns out I might not mind it after all, and in fact, some action might actually improve the show for me by making it less stale (the shonen-battle-style "roughhousing" between Tohru and Kanna, and the equally shonen-y dodgeball match both were pretty amusing for me, despite clashing a little with the slice of life bits). The thing is, it has to have the right balance to it, being primarily a cute girls slice of life-ish show, with some action on the side, not the other way around.

On the other forums, one user recommended me a bunch of uhhh... let's call it "cute girls doing military things" shows. Specifically, these five:

- Girls und Panzer
- Kantai Collection
- High School Fleet
- Strike/Brave Witches
- Sky Girls

I dismissed them because of them having action in them, though, and still am kind of hesitant about them because I'm afraid they might not keep the aforementioned balance. For those, who've seen those shows, can you tell me whether or not I'd like them based on that?

Sorry I couldn't help more. Just have to check stuff out.

- Girls und Panzer
- Kantai Collection
- Strike/Brave Witches
1. Cute girls doing tank battles. The majority of the show being the latter, but it's an enjoyable watch.

2. Ship girls being cute...and fighting an armada of evil ship girls. Pretty actiony, but fun.

3. Heavy fan service, cute girls interacting and occasionally fighting an armada of evil alien ship things. Also a good series if ya can get over the...frequent panty shots.

Okay, thanks for clearing it up for me. I'll think those through.

If action is okay, I recommend The Rolling Girls. It's kind of like a road trip anime starring cute girls, but with the occassional super hero battle throw in and sometimes the power of rock and shamisens save Kyoto from evil buddha missiles. It has some pacing problems, but overall it's a fun watch with some really catchy rock that's bound to cheer you up.

Edit: Oh, and it's an original story and finishes up in one season.

How about Puella Magi Madoka Magica? :D
Looks like nice, wholesome family entertainment. I think I'm gonna go give it a watch. What could possibly go wrong?

Seriously, though, I've already seen it. For me it wasn't even half as good as people made it out to be. Lyrical Nanoha did the whole "dark magical show with lots of drama" thing much better imo.

Looks interesting. I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

It was parodying the magical girl genre of anime and twisting it into something pretty dark. Besides that, I think that was all it was meant to do though.

That explains why I didn't like it so much, then. Nanoha, on top of all the darkness, also had interesting, pretty well-written characters and pretty hard-hitting drama. Madoka Magica's characters were just a bunch of dumb bitches who died because they constantly rebelled against common sense in the name of justice or something, and the drama was incredibly cheesy and forced.

Usagi Drop (or Bunny Drop) is about the only one I think I've watched that might fit. Bachelor salaryman gets word his grandfather dies, arrives to find his grandfather apparently had another kid, a little girl (6). He ends up impulsively deciding to take care of her, anime shows a lot of the changes he has to make to his life to do so.

No major drama that I can recall, nothing that really gets the blood racing and such. The girl is adorable and sometimes amusing. I only remember outright laughing a couple of times, but still enjoyed it. Anime is fairly short and ends on a good note (the manga does a time-skip and takes an...unusual direction).

More heartwarming than comedy, no major drama that I can recall, not focused on school life, generally positive tone.
It may be set in Tokyo, I honestly cannot recall, the beginning is the darkest/most drama focused part I remember, but didn't last and wasn't very bad at all.

My last paycheck was $2500 for working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 8k for months now and she works about 30 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. The potential with this is endless. This is what I do

It was taking all those stupid tropes and laughing at them in a really cruel kind of way.

Yeah, I've heard it becomes a much weirder tale in the manga. Glad I'm not going to have to concern myself with it. I'm also glad to know it ends in a relatively conclusive way because I actually had my eye on this show. I'll definitely check it out now. Thank you for the suggestion.

Well, I certainly would've liked it more if I was told I'm to expect a really twisted dark comedy. You're the first one I've ever seen consider this show as such, though. The general opinion is that it's a super dark, super serious "genre deconstruction" along the lines of Eva.
