By this I mean ignoring sounds and just going into your own little world. Sometimes this can include thought, and sometimes it doesn't. When I've asked people about it, I've found that only guys can fully tune things out, that is, stare at something and have no thoughts. This might not be accurate, but it's what I've found. What about the Escapist? Can you tune things out?

Its a really bad habit of mine, i will just "zone out" if i am bored or if somthing or someone is jsut boring the living daylights out of me. it happens so much and i wish i had a butler who knew when i was doing it and he would just slap me across the face to which i would respond. "thank you, Jeeves."

Sometimes I can, if there isn't much going on. When it's in a really loud setting though, I can't function at all.

I sat for 1.5 hours of a psychology class. It was only when the bell rang, and I snapped back that I realized the teacher had been talking to me for a good portion of the class. (He told me this after the bell went.) >_>

When I'm playing video games, anything is possible for me. I could tune out a Jersey Shore marathon if you plop me down in front of an Xbox with Left 4 Dead in it.

I tune out often when people talk to me... something bores me and it happens.

It happens in clubs too. Feels like all sounds mixing into a noise. And it feels kinda good. So I don't even want to try make anything out of it. Just enjoy the noise.

Men have an easyier time of doing this than women, harks back to the caveman days when hunting prey they would tune out sounds that had no value and consentrate on the sound that a potential meal might make, where-as (no offence ladies) the women folk would sit back at the cave and natter making all kinds of pointless sounds.

I think these days its just mens way of tuning out their other halfs constant nagging. :p

I spend a good portion of my life ignoring people and sounds. it used to be just zoning out but i have this friend to ramble alot so it takes him about 20 minutes to relay about a small paragraph's worth of info, so I now find myself hearing sounds whose information cannot penetrate my brainhole.

Strangely enough, since a thread I saw here a little while ago, I just hum this song and think of Half Life when I need to ignore someone.

Thinking of crowbars instead of someones asinine comments on politics...

Nope. I've got a heightened sense of hearing, so any background noise fucks up my ability to hear anything. :(

I've learned how to tune out a lot of things, sounds included. I used to read a lot before school in middle school, and we all had to wait in the cafeteria until class started, so I got used to ignoring sounds.

I wish I could. The constant background chatter at work from my coworker and boss about every single Japanese variety show is distracting and annoying. Chances are that if I'd try to zone out their exchange of air, I wouldn't hear the orders that are coming in either.

I tend to multitask often, but if the need arises I can tune out whatever noise needs muting.
