By this I mean ignoring sounds and just going into your own little world. Sometimes this can include thought, and sometimes it doesn't. When I've asked people about it, I've found that only guys can fully tune things out, that is, stare at something and have no thoughts. This might not be accurate, but it's what I've found. What about the Escapist? Can you tune things out?
I just did this a few minutes ago, tuned out my sister when I was watching TV. I do it all the time when plaing games and right now I'm tuning out my sister playing Wii...

I can also blankly stare, but find it very difficult to think about nothing... I'm almost always thinking about something...

Yep. I had a period as a preteen where I could zone out while walking and remain zoned out for hours. Scared my Mom to death a couple times when I went out for a walk and didn't come back for two hours (I ended up near the highway... still don't know how I crossed the river...).

Yes, I can do it very well.

Background noise is easy for me. I live near a river, and I can hear it when I sleep, but it's really good for my tinnitus.

I used to do it all the time when I worked retail and had to listen to the same 3 or 4 CDs every day I worked. Because of this, I was also able to hear conversations that many thought I was too far away from until I chimed in correcting whatever it was they said wrong. Thank god I don't work retail anymore.

I have the ability to listen but not listen, as in I don't listen to a word a person is saying but if they ask me to recite what they said almost up to an hour ago (when I wasn't listening) I can almost recite it word for word.
Girlfriends do NOT appreciate this ability. It may drive them to violence if used to often. usually followed by "that got your attention didn't it" and/or "I don't care that you know what I said, I know your weren't listening" you ... can ... not ... win.

It varies depending on what it is I'm trying to ignore and what I'm doing while I'm actively ignoring that, but when I'm reading a book I can tune other people out fairly effectively.

I can literally Not Think.
Its actually something iv found only guys are able to do.
Same. I most of the girls I know can "zone-out" but they are always thinking of something else.
Now, I myself, do it all the time in math. I'd sit there looking at the board and when my friend finally taps me on shoulder then I notice that the teacher is done and she is now sitting behind me at my desk. I love being able to do that.
Lol, i have 4 younger sisters, so long car trips or even being at home when they are all at home present great opportunity to use that gift.
Yeah. I've got a younger brother who is always trying to act smarter than me and a grandmother who is ALWAYS talking. So yeah, best to have this skill.

I mostly stay within my own little world, actually. I can't ever stop thinking though... I'm always thinking about something. When I think of "in my own world", I think of me physically doing nothing that others can see, but in my mind so many things are going on. It truly is my own place away from others. Its quite nice. :)

I can tune/block out certain people and focus more intensively on others. It takes more concentration and focus, but it can be done.
I do this when I'm getting cursed out at work. I put the phone on mute so they don't hear me, and just talk to my friends until the customer stops yelling.

With the aid of a gaming headset, anything can be tuned out. On my own, however...Unless I'm zoned out of otherwise mentally engaged in a task, I tend to hear everything.

Of course, I do. Not so easy with people talking out of their ass, of course, but I do tune things out.
