Ah poor Del Toro and his cancellation curse. What was legendary and WB working on recently also? I forget, but it was news on here.
Agreed, the first film was not too great, I can understand that a sequel is not on everybody's priority list. But this is one of those cases where I believe a sequel with a bigger budget would be a necessary improvement for the IP. Del toro himself said he couldn't put all the ideas he wanted into the original. Restrained budget meant not enough CGI fighting and more generic, badly written drama time with budget actors instead. This time around, get some better actors in, add way more scenes of monster action and perhaps write a few more thorough drafts of script. Well that is what I was hoping the sequel to be. Also set on the alien planet too.

Dammit, this news freaking hurts.

I know the story was really dumb but what I loved about the first one is how graceful they made both the Kaiju and Giant robots look and feel. You could tell they was a lot of love and detail put into each one of them and how they move. Plus being one of the few modern "Giant anythings" movies in cinema nowadays, I was looking forward seeing how much more cool bullshit they were gonna try and pull off in the next one.

Seriously, what's with the luck on this guy?

Why does this keep happening?

I'm still waiting for At the Mountains of Madness, for Azathoth's sake!

I need to stop being a Del Toro fan, there is too much pain.

I loved the first movie, but it didn't really leave itself much to go on for a sequel. That was one of the things I liked about it, in a blockbuster scene where nothing ever ends any more, it wrapped itself up quite well.

So I'm not too broken up about this.

Hrm. I liked the first movie and paid money to see it in IMAX at the theatre (something I rarely do). I probably enjoyed it enough for a repeat performance as well.

I'm actually kind of surprised by this because although the movie didn't do well domestically in the USA, it still doubled it's money in box office receipts once everything was accounted for. I believe it made over 400 million on a 190 million budget. For an original sci-fi property that's actually pretty good... it seems like it's almost begging for the franchise treatment.

If this means he can make another Hellboy movie instead then I ain't complaining.
I think that dream is dead. I don't understand why he doesn't Kickstart that project. Who wouldn't contribute to Hellboy 3?

I'm actually kinda glad it was cancelled. While I did love the movie a sequel wouldn't really fit. They accomplished what they set out to do and stopped the Kaiju and the aliens sending them. The only options I can see them doing is opening another rift or having to fight other Jaegers. Them having to fight more Kaiju would just be more of the same as the first one and having to fight other Jaegers wouldn't make much since the three we see in the movie are the only ones left with the rest being decommissioned or destroyed.

OK, A Del Toro project getting canned isn't a surprise, Pacific Rim not getting a sequel isn't a surprise. What is however very surprising to me is that a. Hellboy 3 is a thing anyone considered and b. people liked Hellboy. Really? Hellboy? as far as I can remember those movies hit basically all the same low points as Bayformers, except you could actually follow the shitty toothless CGI-fest action scenes and the lifeless forgettable (outside Perlman as Hellboy) cast was less skin peelingly annoying.

A lot of his projects sure seem to get cancelled. I'm not sure if he's hard to work with or just cursed.
Cursed seems the likely culprit...at least lately. Most of the cancellations aren't due to him, personally, but rather the studios and producers he's working with turning out to giant bags of dicks.

Dont really care, the first movie doesnt live up to a second viewing very well. Apart from the robot/monster battles and scenes with Ron Pealman the rest is boring. Id rather Del Toro direct Hellboy 3 or In The Mountains Of Madness.

Man, Del Toro cannot catch a break this time.
What was his last project to reach completion?

I should really watch the first and see if this news devastates me or not.

And dammit, do it before Perlman is too old or dead to do the job!

OOOOOOH SNAP!!!

OT: Yeah, I don't mind much. The first movie had that one very well done action setpiece in the middle and some nice colours, but beyond that it was quite forgetable. Props though for not hooking the two leads up in the end by default.

What Pacific Rim really needed was a prequel animated series or a set of mini-sodes similar to The Animatrix. They had been fighting these kaiju for years and we see very little of that.

Truth be told... I did not care.

The original was, in my informed but subjective opinion... BAD. Both as a movie, as an action... and even as a "giant robot" story.

The again I am one of those assholes that think giant robots are stupid by default...

*How much I would have preferred a more... authentic one, with more action and actually showing the might of the planet's war machines instead of relying on inferior giant robots...

"Doesn't like fun. Doesn't understand robots."

Hellboy 2 was awesome. The thing is, it was made to be a second part of the trilogy, which is kind of obvious. It wasn't meant to be a standalone movie with a satisfying conclusion of its own.
