Elks are animals. Animals feel things. This animal probably felt a great deal of affection for the populace of the town, who repaid it in kind. It's only natural to mourn the passing of someone you like - if you want to do it by candlelight vigil, by all means, go ahead.

Come on, I'm a vegetarian and I don't understand the thinking behind this. Things move on every day. In the (adapted, because I can't remember it exactly) words of JFK; 'Time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look to the past or present are certain to miss the future.'
I don't even notice candlelight parties to people who were productive in society, so elks are kinda small in the grand plan. I'm not saying elks are less important than humans or anything like that, but if we can't appreciate each other why appreciate something with more legs?

The elk was BATMAN!?!?!

He was the elk Boulder deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

By any chance did the police officer who shot him look like this?

If only Elk were included in open carry legislation he would have been able to defend himself.

Ok I'm done now.

Captcha: get well
Holy crap, even the captcha can't give this guy a break.
Really the Elk had gone crazy, and was going to shoot a child based on a coin toss.

The gun man shot the elk to protect the town's heart and soul.

Hey if they want to hold a vigil, let them hold a vigil. It's no problem for me. Obviously some people cared about that Elk, and if that's how they choose to spend their time, what hassle is it to me? I've seen plenty of people do even sillier things - like yell and scream and cry at the outcome of a game in which two groups of grown men try to kick balls into nets on a grass field. The outcome of these games shouldn't matter to anyone, but they apparently do, and massively so.

So yeah, holding a vigil for an Elk is a bit silly, but so is 75% of all of what people do, and I also include my activities. I do a LOT of stupid, pointless stuff - we all do. That's part of being human.

on duty bolder patrol shoot an elk that was on the highway.. most likely reason: it was a safety hazard to motorists. reason given by the animal lovers: theyre poachers (and therefore they should be fired)... do you wanna hold the vigil for an elk or for your neighbour who was driving home from work when an elk goes through their windshield at 110k

Unusual maybe, but certainly not stupid. From what I've read it seems like the elk in question is an animal that's regularly visited them and grown accustomed to them as opposed to a random animal. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that they might've adopted it as a sort of town mascot, like some beloved ancient tortoise living in the town pond or some such. It's obvious they must've cared enough about it to hold a candle light vigil for it. It's nowhere near as bad as hippies crying over the spirits of the trees or atheists unblessing a road. As a former resident of Boulder, this is business as usual. The people there love animals, and the cops are bored. That's that.

I completely misread the subject and thought that they were holding a vigil whilst the elk were having sex.

I blame <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_250/7443-Slow-Death-In-a-Shady-Glen>videogames.

OT: I entirely get why a community would be saddened at the death of a town mascot, but a candlelit vigil is a bit much. That said, it's hardly the end of the world - just a little OTT.

seems to me it would probably be for the kids more then the elk, which is cool that the parents and stuff would do that, teach their children an important lesson about life and caring for nature and such.

Well, I think that's absolutely harmless at worst and kind of sweet at best.

I'm really not sure why I'm supposed to be curling my lip over this.

It sounds like it a very nice elk.

That seems...odd. I don't know many people who would hold a candlelight vigil for their pets (who many regard a members of the family) let alone a wild animal.

What bothers me about the whole thing are some of the statements made about the elk in the article, about how it "loved them", and was considered a "guardian". This kind of thinking is dangerous. Elks are wild animals, and those hooves and antlers are no joke. Anthropomorphizing it, rather than treating it like the creature it is, is irresponsible. Loving animals is fine, but love them for what they actually are, not what you'd like to imagine them to be.

For all you who think the candlelight vigil is bad, you'll love what the people of boulder in general are calling for. There have been letters mailed to the Boulder Police calling for various responses, including but not limited to, fines, firing the officers responsible, jail time, and even execution. Over an elk. As a Colorado resident who does NOT live in Boulder, I find all this ridiculous, except maybe for the fine if it could somehow be construed as illegal hunting. But come on, it was an elk. This is no reason to ruin someone's life. In my part of Colorado, instead of a candlelight vigil, we would have been enjoying some nice elk steak with the officer.
