Try Everquest. Not the sequel, but the original. Yes its graphics suck compared to most things today, but with over a dozen expansions and 13 years behind it, it has more room for you to grind than you could ever hope for.

Minecraft might be fun, too. Play it on survival mode and just build build build!

I support the Mount and Blade suggestion. There are few things more fun than utterly trashing an enemy army with your small band of utterly elite warriors, although the game might get repetitive after, I don't know, shitload of hours.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are also great. Especially the second game is unrivalled as the best CRPG ever. I haven't played the EE, but there's something called BGTutu, which allows you to play the first game with the graphical and gameplay of the second. Legendary games.

I also propose Alpha Protocol. The enemy AI is horrible, but the story is interesting. It's the only game that allows you to play a character very similar to Sterling Mallory Archer, and it even precedes that awesome show! The way it handles gameplay choices is also very interesting.

I second Alpha Protcol; though I should mention the main storyline is fairly short by RPG standards, you will play it multiple times. It's a game that really nails player choice perfectly in that virtually any character can be dead by the end of the game, and it's actually possible to outwit the main conspiracy and pull the rug out from underneath them if you make the right moves.

Oh, and it has some really fun characters too. Just make sure you get pistols as a specialisation and you should have fun.

Sounding better than expected already.

Was expecting just an average JRPG and getting my main enjoyment simply from the change of pace and setting compared to most standard WRPGs. But I've quite a liking for difficult and challenging combat systems so this might turn out much better.
I think you'll like this one then, you have to pay attention to turn orders, flanking (and protecting your squads from being flanked), etc.

I had the opposite experience. I played half way through it without paying much attention to the battle rank, loved it. When I did finally read up on it I restarted the game and found it laborious to always be concerned about how I was leveling. It was far more fun not knowing about the punishing BR system. Level scaling is rarely done well.

Had the same experience with Oblivion too, I played through the entire game before I realized that I was "playing it wrong". I loved it the first time but going back to play it again, aware of the level scaling, sucked the fun right out of it.
Hm, I played it through normally without reading about the BR, and I went through it fine. I would agree that the BR is one of the weaker points though, especially if you want to min/max (as a lot of people like to do with JRPGs).

well for starters its way faster than tera, id estimate it is atleast twice as fast as tera's combat.

this mainly stems from the fact that despite being action combat tera is still based around using hot keys, mean while in vindictus you rarely use you hotkeys unless you need to use a potion or transform in to something else like a paladin or a death knight.
instead you focus on attacking and doing combo attacks and eventually dodging out of the way, again, in at least double the speed tera does it and without feeling like wow with dodging.

so vindictus is a lot more like devil may cry or any other action rpg mean while tera is more like wow except again with dodging, not bad sure but i personally think vindictus is still better.

although in tera's defence theres no character in vindictus who uses two handed swords so you technically cant be dante yet in the game, you can soon however be a female kratos.

also a character nmed kai is getting a crossbow gun making him even more easy mode than he already was.

That does sound appealing, downloading the client now. How are the other (non-combat) aspects of the game? I'm reading about it being instanced based, is that a problem? How's the general questing done? Also how would you compare it to Raiderz (aside from the terrible name), another F2P action MMORPG that just came out?

Well there's not many non combat aspects of it, there is crafting where you get materials an have a npc make stuff for you like armor or weapons, or if you want you can just train in a profession and do it yourself. there was also a snowball throwing mini game once but it sucked and is not here any more.

If you want other activities besides fighting you can always play the sequel mabinogi, not sure if a sequel is the right word though considering this game came out in like 2011 and mabinogi was out in like 2003 but vindictus is still a prequel to the game, hell in korea the game is called mabinogi heroes.

Anyway, no the instances are not a major problem, basically how the questing works is that you first get a quest from a npc, then you go to a battle board, which basically lets you choos which instance you want to go to.

once you have chosen you get to a boat or you wait in town for a party to form, unless you want to go solo in which case you just hit the start button and voila you're in the dungeon fighting gnolls.

usally the quest consist of, do this dungeon, with the occasional item finding quest which can be avoided pretty easily using the market place.

now about raiderz, its like tera, i mean id almost call it a exact copy aside from the art style, that and raiderz have been free to play all along mean while tera has only recently begun with the free to play stuff.

Hm. Try out the old school RPGs on GOG, with mods of course. If you're looking into M&B, check out c-rpg, it's a mod that makes character progression across multiplayer, it's pretty rad.

THREAD NECROMANCY POWERS, ACTIVATE!

Dwarf Fortress. It has a steep learning curve, but with patience, and a good guide, it's easy to get into. Endless possibilities, stories, dwarven carvings. And of course, my favorite instance of playing..

In what other game do dwarves bite the eyes of giants?

Captcha: Smelling salt
To wake you up to the dwarves.
