Can't turn the volume all the way down on my iPod Classic...anyone else?

A few weeks ago during a class, I came across the most peculiar problem with my 80 gig iPod classic: I could not turn the volume all the way to zero. I could scroll the volume guage all the way down, but when it hit the bottom, I could still hear the music pretty clearly.

I swear when I bought it this summer it was not like that. It's only a big problem now because I like to listen to music while I'm studying, but very very low. I like it to be just loud enough to fill up the silence, but not loud enough to distract me. And now that it's doing this, many songs are a tad too loud and I can't make it go any lower.

So I looked it up on Google, and it seems this problem dates back to 2005, occurring on the older generations of iPod classic, too. From what I've been able to gather it only happens to iPod classics and the only way to get it to stop is to just get Apple to replace the iPod. I don't think it's a feature that came in a recent update, but then again I don't have another iPod classic to test.

My question to you all is...has this happened to you, or anyone you know? If you have an iPod classic, can you turn the volume to zero right now and achieve total silence? I've tried restoring it, resetting it, and I know it is fully updated. I do plan on taking it to the Apple store, but I wanted to get some input here, first.

It is most likely your headphones. I got a new pair that are so loud, I can still hear the song when it is turned all the way down.

That is a good idea, I never thought of that. But I just tested with both my usual headphones and the original headphones the iPod comes with and they both do the same thing.

Sorry, that is all I had...

See if Rockbox is available for your iPod, and install that. It has a lot more features than the original firmware and if your problem's a software one, Rockbox should fix it. You can always go back to your original firmware if it doesn't work or you don't like it.

Not able to achieve absolute silence? That's odd, I usually hear problems about their Ipod being too quiet, but too loud? That's a new one for me. I personally have a 3rd gen IPod touch which can be silenced so I don't know much about the others. I suppose it's just how it is, after a while they just start decreasing in quality the longer you own it until one day where they stop working (or at least that's what my sister said).

It looks like they don't have my generation of iPod covered, but I'll keep an eye on them. Thanks!
