the arrow is the white space between the lower two legs of the capital "E" and the "x." It's pointing right. And yes, they designed the logo to have that arrow on purpose.

OT: The reason is memory association, when you find something new in an image or perhaps a sound, then when you see it again in future, your memory automatically associates the new discovery with that image, it's a recognition thing.

This may be an attempt at a subliminal message through careful graphic design, implying that "Stuff gets to the target (X marks the spot)" when shipped via Federal Express, but I doubt it. The figure-ground relationship of the "negative space of the arrow" is non-dominant when compared to the text of the logo.
